Millions of users worldwide were unable to send and receive messages today due to a technical issue with WhatsApp servers. While users couldn’t send any messages to group chats, their messages to individual chats weren’t delivered because it was showing only one tick.
The outage was reported on a global scale. Users first believed that there were problems with their smartphone, mobile network, or Wi-Fi, but later discovered that WhatsApp was unavailable everywhere.
The parent company of WhatsApp, Meta, acknowledged the issue and announced earlier today that a fix was being developed. A Meta spokesperson told the media, “We’re aware that some users are currently experiencing trouble sending messages, and we’re working to restore WhatsApp for everyone as quickly as possible.”
Uncertainty surrounds the cause of the outage, but when Meta or WhatsApp update their information, we should learn more.
