Abu Dhabi Police has issued a warning about the dangers of young people and “unsuspecting” adults being targeted in a online scam.

The police said the scam targets children, teenagers and “unsuspecting” adults to illegally take their money through internet games, advertisements and social media forums.

Abu Dhabi Police said the scammers use various deceptive methods to trick people into sending money, sometimes posing as legitimate organisations or businesses.

The police referred to a recent case where scammers took photos or video of the victims in compromising positions and then threatened and blackmailed them, according to the report on news agency WAM.

Abu Dhabi Police urged parents to monitor their children’s online activities, especially while setting up virtual groups for remote education, and to encourage them to report any attempts to bully or blackmail them.

The police urged families to report such cases by calling the hotline Aman Service on 8002626.
