Axis hosted an event called Connect in Abu Dhabi, which is well aligned with various initiatives that influence the direction of the UAE market. Cybersecurity, sustainability, edge computing, AI, and other topics were thoroughly discussed.  Connect assisted in raising awareness about these issues and what all organizations can do to protect themselves, their customers, and government initiatives.

Rabab Zehra, our Executive Editor, hosted an exclusive interview with Andrea Sorri, Segment Development Manager, Smart Cities – EMEA, to gain event insights and expand on the topic of smart cities. Continue reading for more information.

How is security playing an important role in defining smart cities?

Many of today’s ‘smart’ cities began as ‘safe’ cities—with security-focused platforms and analytics. Feeling safe and secure is a fundamental principle of a healthy and functioning society.
That’s why every day, we help city officials, emergency services, and law enforcement work more efficiently toward keeping citizens safe and deterring crime. With our innovative, scalable cameras and IoT solutions, we help streamline citizen safety, emergency management, and crime investigations.

What are some of the solutions used by smart cities to generate absolute security?

Citizen safety

As cities grow, so do their safety needs. Crimes such as theft, vandalism, and intrusion – which may have been easy for officials in small cities to tackle – become more challenging to prevent.

How citizens behave also changes with added crowds or traffic. That’s why it’s so important to keep on top of how your city is evolving.

Axis and partner analytics monitor how people move and travel within the city and can identify trends and potential risks.

For example, using network video and audio deterrence, you can detect incidents or crimes in real-time, and intervene with live audio announcements before safety officials arrive on the scene. Applications like this make it easy for city officials to respond to challenges, identify potential crime hot spots, and make decisions to help keep citizens safe.

Emergency management
Critical situations count on immediate, informed decision-making to ensure the safety and well-being of those involved.

Our network video and audio solutions help give you accurate, swift situational awareness in an emergency. The right information helps to optimize the dispatch of resources. With live video, first responders can be directed to where they are needed the most.

With network audio, you can integrate a public address to inform, warn, and guide people to safety. Axis products are based on an open platform, so systems from different networks across your city can be connected to share data and ensure the fastest, most informed response to an emergency.

Crime investigations
Axis and our partners provide solutions to help law enforcement collect high-quality evidence and data to speed up crime investigations.

When a crime happens, time is of the essence. And oftentimes, finding what you’re looking for can be challenging and time-consuming. Powerful forensic search solutions can search through hours of multi-camera video streams in minutes.
It’s possible to search for specific attributes – for example, a specific shirt color at a crowded festival – and quickly pinpoint the important data. Video analytics solutions can also be used to prevent crime. For instance, you can track and identify suspect behavior and intervene before incidents occur.

How is Axis playing a role in helping smart cities achieve their goals?
We strive to support cities around the world with their unique challenges. Our solutions are designed to help these cities make a positive contribution towards achieving their smart city targets. By supplementing existing systems with additional sensors, cameras, and analytics, Axis enables cities to evolve from ‘safe’ to ‘smart,’- making the transition from simply ‘security’ to ‘enhanced security, mobility, and environmental monitoring’ at their own pace.
