Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pony.ai. The partnership will start pilot trials of autonomous vehicles in Dubai later this year. The trials aim to pave the way for a fully driverless commercial service set for launch in 2026.

Pony.ai recently revealed its seventh generation of autonomous vehicles. These vehicles are developed with leading car manufacturers, including Toyota, GAC, and BAIC. They feature advanced artificial intelligence algorithms and a sophisticated sensor suite. This includes lidars, radars, and cameras to ensure precise navigation and safety in various road and weather conditions.

The company also reported partnerships with major technology firms like Tencent and Alibaba. These collaborations will integrate robotaxi services into platforms such as WeChat and Alipay.

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by key officials. His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General of RTA, and Dr. Leo Wang, CFO of Pony.ai, were present. The agreement was signed by Mr. Ahmed Hashim Bahrozyan, CEO of Public Transport Agency (RTA), and Ms. Ann Shi, Vice President of Strategy and Business Development at Pony.ai.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer highlighted the importance of the partnership. He said it supports Dubai’s efforts to adopt autonomous mobility solutions. He also noted that Dubai is becoming a global platform for expanding such technologies beyond China.

Al Tayer explained that RTA plans to convert 25% of all trips in Dubai into autonomous journeys by 2030. He called this the Dubai Smart Self-Driving Transport Strategy. The initiative aims to promote smart, efficient, and sustainable mobility.

The operation of autonomous taxis is expected to improve the integration of transport systems. It will ease access to final destinations and support the first and last-mile strategy. Moreover, autonomous taxis will enhance road safety and offer more convenience for residents and visitors.

Dr. Leo Wang of Pony.ai emphasized the regional impact of this collaboration. He said the partnership aligns with their goal to deploy Level 4 autonomous technology in strategic global markets. He added that the collaboration will help establish standards for intelligent transportation across the MENA region.
