Google AI has announced a US$1 billion investment to expand access to artificial intelligence (AI) training and tools across the United States.

The initiative will run over three years and target higher education institutions and non-profit organisations.

The tech giant revealed that over 100 universities are already participating. These include major academic networks such as Texas A&M and the University of North Carolina.

According to Google, participating institutions will receive a range of resources. These include:

  • Financial grants
  • Cloud computing credits
  • Free licenses for the advanced Gemini chatbot

James Manyika, Senior Vice-President at Google for Research, Labs, Technology & Society, reported that the company aims to scale the programme to all accredited non-profit colleges in the US.

He also revealed that Google is considering similar plans for international expansion.

The announcement follows recent moves by other tech companies. Microsoft pledged US$4 billion to support global AI integration in education. OpenAI and Anthropic have also launched similar efforts.

The initiative marks Google’s latest push to lead AI adoption and innovation in the education sector.
