Climate change is significantly increasing fire risks across the Middle East, creating an urgent need for technological innovation and advanced strategies to adapt to these challenges. This critical issue will be a central focus of the Fire & Rescue Conference at Intersec 2025, where global experts will address how rising temperatures, water scarcity, and extreme weather events are escalating fire threats in urban and industrial areas.

The Middle East is already experiencing the severe effects of climate change. Forecasts predict a dramatic increase in extreme heat days by 2050, with the UAE facing 133 to 144 days annually and Saudi Arabia enduring 108 to 124 days under leading climate scenarios. These conditions, combined with prolonged droughts and water shortages, are placing unprecedented pressure on firefighting operations and increasing the likelihood of wildfires, even in regions with sparse vegetation.

Dana Nassif, Senior Consultant for Fire & Life Safety at WSP Middle East, highlights the challenges: “Rising temperatures and droughts are increasing fire risks across the Middle East. Water scarcity poses a significant challenge for firefighting systems, particularly as urban areas expand. Addressing these risks will require sustainable water strategies, advanced fire technologies using artificial intelligence (AI) and predictive modeling, and resilience-focused building designs.”

A 2020 Think Hazard study underscores the growing challenges, predicting high risks of water scarcity for the UAE and Saudi Arabia, with droughts expected every five years. This adds to the stress on firefighting resources and infrastructure.

Paul Jennings, Assistant Fire Commissioner at Red Sea Global, emphasizes the importance of preparedness: “At Red Sea Global, ensuring the safety of our guests is our top priority. We’ve implemented comprehensive in-house emergency response protocols and maintain a dedicated team of 131 trained responders. Our investment in advanced technologies and governance frameworks demonstrates our commitment to safety and resilience.”

Both the UAE and Saudi Arabia are making significant investments to enhance resilience against climate change and associated fire risks. Saudi Arabia’s $6 billion investment in 200 water projects and the UAE’s Water Security Strategy 2036 are pivotal steps toward addressing water scarcity and improving firefighting capabilities.

Intersec 2025, set to take place from 14-16 January 2025 at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), will bring together 1,200 exhibitors from 60 countries. The event will showcase the latest advancements in fire safety, including AI-driven fire prediction technologies, automated emergency response systems, and sustainable water solutions for firefighting. Global and regional companies such as NAFFCO, Bristol Fire Engineering, and Victaulic will present cutting-edge products tailored to meet the industry’s evolving needs.

Grant Tuchten, Portfolio Director at Messe Frankfurt Middle East, underscores the significance of the event: “Intersec 2025 will provide a platform for fire safety experts, technology innovators, and decision-makers to tackle the growing fire risks in the Middle East. By showcasing advanced solutions and fostering collaboration, we aim to strengthen resilience and safety across the region.”

As climate change continues to intensify fire risks, events like Intersec 2025 play a crucial role in driving innovation and collaboration to address these growing challenges.
