Amazon is following suit, a week after Google declared that the Matter deployment to Android and Google Home was complete. For those who are unfamiliar, Matter is a new interconnectivity standard that aims to simplify the operation of smart homes. You only need to confirm that your smart speaker or phone supports Matter rather than determining whether the items you buy are compatible with your preferred smart home ecosystem. And right now, these devices have early support from both Google and Amazon.

The e-commerce giant had already told during the Matter launch event that it wanted to release support for the standard. The following 17 Echo devices may now manage Matter devices through Wi-Fi, connecting millions of owners to the new standard:

  • Echo Dot (5th Gen)
  • Echo Dot (5th Gen) with clock
  • Echo (4th Gen)
  • Echo Dot (3rd Gen, 2018 release)
  • Echo Studio
  • Echo Show 8 (2nd Gen, 2021 release)
  • Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen)
  • Echo Show 5 (2nd Gen, 2021 release)
  • Echo Show 15
  • Echo Dot (Gen 3 with Clock)
  • Echo Dot (Gen 4 with Clock)
  • Echo Show 5
  • Echo (v3)
  • Echo Dot Gen 4
  • Echo Input
  • Echo Flex
  • Echo Show 8

Along with the support for the above-mentioned Echo devices, the company has also added Matter support to several plugs, bulbs, and switches that can be set up with Android. It will be simple to expand your smart home beyond simply items supporting Amazon’s APIs because the company guarantees that you won’t notice much of a difference in terms of setup and usage when compared to devices part of the “Works with Alexa” programme. However, amazon still encourages developers to join the “Works with Alexa” program.

Amazon makes it clear that this is just the beginning of the Matter rollout and that support will eventually be extended to more platforms and devices. The business has not yet included support for Matter over Thread, a mesh network similar to Wi-Fi that is ideal for low-power gadgets like smart locks. Additionally, Amazon plans to provide compatibility for additional Echo models and device categories.
