Meta and the Dubai Future Foundation have launched the Llama Design Drive, the region’s premier AI accelerator, powered by Startupbootcamp. This new initiative is aimed at fostering innovation in AI across the Middle East and North Africa. The first cohort of the Llama Design Drive features 22 startups and 8 AI development professionals who will address key industry challenges with AI solutions.

The accelerator program, leveraging Meta’s open-source Llama 3.1 model, is designed to accelerate the creation of groundbreaking AI technologies. By facilitating collaboration between startups and leading UAE corporations, the program aligns with the UAE’s vision to become a global leader in AI technology.

Over a 4-week AI design sprint, participating startups will tackle real-world business challenges presented by major UAE companies such as Emirates airline, The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), Dubai Holding, and Chalhoub Group. This initiative provides startups with unparalleled opportunities to develop and pitch AI-driven solutions that can make a significant impact both commercially and socially.

Startups will be based at AREA 2071, Dubai Future Foundation’s advanced innovation hub, where they will receive mentorship and participate in workshops designed to support their product development. The program underscores the UAE’s commitment to building a vibrant AI ecosystem and supporting its digital transformation goals.

The involvement of Emirates, RTA, Dubai Holding, and Chalhoub Group highlights AI’s critical role in driving business innovation across various sectors. Emirates aims to enhance accessibility for travelers, RTA is focused on improving public transport with AI, Dubai Holding seeks better GHG emissions reporting, and Chalhoub Group is working on advanced analytics for retail.

Selected startups will have the opportunity to work closely with Meta’s engineering teams and may be fast-tracked into a global program, potentially receiving up to $500,000 in funding. This initiative is set to drive AI innovation and strengthen the UAE’s position as a leader in the field.

Abdulaziz Al Jaziri, Deputy CEO and COO of Dubai Future Foundation, emphasized the program’s role in highlighting Dubai as a global AI hub. Joulan Abdul Khalek from Meta expressed excitement about leveraging open-source AI to solve complex challenges and drive meaningful impact in the UAE and beyond.
