Undoubtedly, technology is revolutionizing the world and impacting every sector, from business to education. In Central Africa, where many young people are unemployed or underemployed, acquiring basic tech skills can make a big difference.

Technology is essential in our modern world. The benefits are evident whether you have a computer at home or use the internet regularly. But, if your region (like Central Africa) does not have the same resources as developed areas, there are specific vital skills that you must acquire to take advantage of these technologies, which will help you with everything from finding jobs to communicating better with friends and family.

Here are five tech skills that every Central African youth should know:

1. Computer basics

This may seem obvious, but many young people in Central Africa have never been able to use a computer. Learning how to use a computer can open up many possibilities, from applying for jobs to accessing online education.

During a recent trip to Cameroon, I met a young woman named Chantal. Chantal managed a small shop selling clothing but wanted to do more. She wanted to start her own business. But she told me she’s never used a computer before. She was worried she wouldn’t know how to hire a website designer, use Google to research how to start a business, write a business plan, or advertise her new business. It was a big problem until I connected Chantal with a computer educator. She’s now learning to use a computer to make her business dreams a reality.

2. How to use the internet

The internet is a powerful tool that can be used for research, communication and networking. Learning how to use the internet can help young people in Central Africa connect with the world and access information and resources they would otherwise be unable to get.

3. Use of social media

social media is a great way to stay connected with friends and family and a powerful tool for networking and marketing. Learning to use social media can help young people in Central Africa remain connected with the world and promote their ‘own’ businesses or projects.

4. How to use Microsoft Office

Microsoft Office is a software suite widely used in businesses worldwide. Using Microsoft Office can help young people in Central Africa get ahead in the job market and give them the skills they need to succeed in the workplace.

5. Basics of essential design software

Design software such as Adobe Photoshop, Canva, and Illustrator is becoming increasingly popular and used in various industries. Critical design software can help young people in Central Africa stand out from the crowd and give them the skills they need to succeed in a competitive job market.

In conclusion, the African youth today is the future of this continent. The good news is that more and more young people are getting involved in technology, especially in countries like South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya, where the smartphone penetration rate is very high. But even though many young folks are making their way into the world of digital technology, many need basic tech skills to succeed.
