Vertiv, a global digital infrastructure solutions provider, has upgraded its thermal management product lineup. The new Vertiv™ Liebert EFC free cooling unit now features a low-GWP (Global Warming Potential) refrigerant. This innovation is designed to meet strict environmental standards in data center applications, including colocation and cloud services. Available across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), the Liebert EFC offers capacities from 150 to 450 kW.
The Vertiv™ Liebert EFC integrates indirect air-to-air heat exchange and evaporative cooling. With its patented polymer heat exchanger and inverter-driven compressor technology, the unit enhances efficiency by up to 19% compared to previous models. It also achieves a partial Power Usage Effectiveness (pPUE) as low as 1.05.
A major advantage of the Liebert EFC is its flexibility. Users can reduce power or water usage through software controls, allowing the system to switch to free cooling mode based on site-specific conditions. This feature helps data center owners lower their environmental impact while ensuring continuous cooling. The unit also offers full water independence with direct expansion (DX) backup, ensuring reliability without needing water.
Sam Bainborough, Vice President of Thermal Business EMEA at Vertiv, said, “As sustainability becomes a priority, businesses are seeking cooling solutions that minimize resource use while ensuring operational flexibility.” He added, “The Liebert EFC offers a flexible, game-changing system that maximizes free cooling using the natural power of evaporation.”
The new Liebert EFC meets global regulations, including the EU F-Gas Regulation (2024/573) and IPCC AR4. It is built for scalability, easy maintenance, and durability. The polymer design improves corrosion resistance and supports a wider range of water qualities compared to traditional aluminum heat exchangers. At its core, the unit uses Vertiv™ Liebert iCOM™ control algorithms for automatic mode transitions, ensuring reliable cooling without the need for an additional plant management system.
