These figures were revealed in February 2025, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, WhatsApp could face increased legal obligations. These would include stronger measures to identify, manage, and reduce harmful or illegal content on the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking to reporters, commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier said a future designation has not been ruled out. He confirmed that the assessment process is actively underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If approved, the new status would place WhatsApp under stricter regulatory oversight. This would require greater transparency and regular risk assessments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The European Commission has been expanding scrutiny of major digital platforms. This is part of broader efforts to strengthen online safety and platform accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, no final decision has been announced.
