The development is part of Cisco\u2019s expanding full-stack quantum networking program, built on years of research, real-world demonstrations, and growing ecosystem collaborations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quantum computers encode information in different ways. Until now, no switch could accept and translate between all major encoding modalities without destroying quantum information during the process. The new system is designed to route quantum information while preserving it at room temperature. It operates on existing telecom fiber. It also uses a Cisco-patented conversion engine that translates between encoding modalities at both input and output.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Cisco, this approach allows quantum systems to communicate even if they were never designed to interoperate. The system supports major quantum encoding modalities, including polarization, time-bin, frequency-bin, and path encoding. Polarization has already been experimentally validated, while time-bin and frequency-bin are built into the design for future validation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In experiments conducted by Cisco researchers using its own entanglement source and single-photon detectors, the quantum switch demonstrated accurate routing and conversion without destroying quantum information. The results showed quantum state fidelity and entanglement degradation of less than or equal to 4 percent, preserving coherence needed for network function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the system operates with nano-second electro-optic switching, reconfiguring connections in as little as 1 nanosecond. It is also highly energy efficient, consuming less than 1 watt of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company emphasized that quantum computing at scale will require millions of qubits for real-world applications in healthcare, financial services, and aerospace. The quantum switch is positioned as a foundational step toward connecting distributed quantum systems across vendors and technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vijoy Pandey, SVP\/GM of Outshift, Cisco&#8217;s Emerging Technologies and Incubation Group, highlighted that the vision is to build the network layer for the quantum era. The system is designed to function as a universal translator for quantum information, enabling scalable interconnection similar to how classical internet switching enabled global connectivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cisco also stated that the quantum future will depend on connected systems rather than isolated machines. The quantum switch is intended to support this vision by enabling routing and translation of quantum information across different platforms without loss of integrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The quantum switch represents an early but significant step toward practical quantum networking infrastructure.
