While compute resources can be reused across training and inference cycles, AI-generated data, including training datasets, inference logs, embeddings, and outputs, continues to accumulate over time.

As a result, enterprises are increasingly making infrastructure decisions based on long-term data retention requirements and operational economics rather than short-term compute needs.

Proven Infrastructure Gains Preference

The survey found that organizations are favoring established technologies as AI deployments scale.

Around 66% of respondents said they have deprioritized, or are considering deprioritizing, newer technologies in favor of infrastructure that delivers consistent reliability and predictable performance at scale.

Reliability and AI Workloads Top the Agenda

The findings show that organizations are placing equal emphasis on supporting AI workloads and improving infrastructure reliability.

Approximately 69% of respondents identified support for AI training and inference workloads as a key priority. The same percentage also cited reliability and availability improvements as critical objectives.

Meanwhile, latency optimization ranked significantly lower. Only 7% of respondents considered it a primary focus compared with scalability, reliability, and operational efficiency.

Capacity Expansion and Cost Efficiency Drive Planning

As AI-generated data volumes continue to increase, organizations are placing greater importance on storage capacity and cost management.

The survey revealed that 87% of respondents prioritize capacity expansion and total cost of ownership (TCO) optimization when planning AI infrastructure investments.

In addition, 74% cited TCO, capacity, and scalability as the main advantages of hard disk drive (HDD)-based infrastructure.

HDDs Continue to Play a Major Role

The research found that HDDs remain the dominant storage medium across many data center environments.

Among respondents with visibility into their storage infrastructure, 70% reported operating HDD-majority environments, where HDDs account for more than half of total storage capacity.

Furthermore, 35% said HDDs represent more than 75% of their total storage capacity.

Abish Mohamed, representing Amstergi Middle East, said HDDs remain part of the company’s long-term strategy because they provide reliable and scalable storage at a lower cost, making them suitable for large data volumes and long-term retention requirements.

One anonymous survey respondent described HDDs as a strategic capacity solution rather than a legacy technology, noting that they offer the lowest cost per terabyte and are well suited for data growth. The respondent added that the future lies in combining HDDs and SSDs rather than choosing one over the other.

Industry Shift Toward Continuous Data Systems

The survey suggests that organizations are increasingly designing infrastructure to support continuous AI data systems rather than isolated workloads or short-term experimentation.

According to the findings, AI infrastructure is evolving into a long-term data management challenge, requiring organizations to focus on sustained scalability and storage efficiency.

Ahmed Shihab, Chief Product Officer at Western Digital, said AI is fundamentally a data systems challenge rather than solely a compute challenge. He noted that customer requirements continue to shape the company’s innovation roadmap and technologies for the AI era.

Shihab added that while compute resources can be reused, data continues to persist and grow. He said organizations that succeed in the next phase of AI will be those that build infrastructure designed for continuous data systems at scale rather than focusing only on peak compute performance.

Another anonymous survey respondent stated that HDDs remain essential because they continue to offer the most economical and reliable way to store large volumes of data over extended periods. While SSDs dominate performance-intensive workloads, the respondent said HDDs remain unmatched for bulk storage applications.

Survey Methodology

The findings are based on a 2026 survey conducted by Western Digital among 200 of its top global customers spanning hyperscale cloud, CSP, and enterprise sectors. Of those surveyed, 80 respondents represented organizations responsible for enterprise infrastructure strategy, data center operations, and storage architecture. Response totals varied across individual survey questions.

The survey findings underscore how Western Digital sees storage scalability, reliability, and long-term economics becoming central considerations as enterprises expand AI deployments and manage rapidly growing data volumes.

[9716,9661
5405
9732
post-105985","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-global-brands","category-tech-value-chain","tag-storage-drives","contributor-news-desk
["GET
