This rule is intended to prevent companies from gaining exclusive rights over terms that competitors may need to use in advertising or product descriptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, EU trademark rules provide an exception for companies that can demonstrate their name has acquired distinctiveness through long term use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ruling means OpenAI&#8217;s appeal has been unsuccessful, while its logo remains protected.
