The updates include parental alerts, emergency response capabilities, improved AI responses developed with mental health experts, and stricter content controls for teens.

The company said the new features are designed to provide age appropriate AI experiences while helping teenagers access offline support from parents, trusted adults, professional helplines, or emergency services when needed.

As part of the update, Meta AI will now notify parents using Instagram parental supervision tools if a teen’s conversation with the AI suggests they may be at risk of suicide or self-harm. The alerts will be based on signals developed in collaboration with experts and will include resources to help parents approach these conversations with their teenagers.

Previously, Meta AI directed teens expressing suicidal thoughts or self-harm intentions to crisis helplines and encouraged them to contact a parent or another trusted adult. The new feature adds proactive parental notifications when conversations indicate a possible risk.

To determine which conversations require an alert, Meta worked with parents and mental health experts to identify signals, including subtle references to self-harm. The company then developed a dedicated AI system to detect these conversations.

Before any notification is sent, every conversation flagged by the AI will be manually reviewed. If a teen’s intent remains unclear, Meta said it will err on the side of caution and notify parents. While this approach could occasionally result in unnecessary alerts, the company believes it is the right starting point and will continue refining the system.

Larry Magid, CEO and Co-Founder of ConnectSafely, said, “While I believe that teens have a right to privacy, I also believe parents need to be informed if their teen may be at risk of hurting themselves. That’s why I advocated for this approach and support Meta’s decision to notify parents when, after careful review, it determines that a conversation with Meta AI contains indications of possible suicide or self-harm that warrant an alert. I appreciate how Meta struck the right balance, protecting teen privacy while ensuring parents have the information they need to support their teen.”

The alerts are now available for parents using Instagram parental supervision in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. Meta plans to expand the feature globally by the end of the year. These alerts build on existing notifications sent when supervised teens repeatedly search for suicide or self-harm related terms on Instagram within a short period.

In addition, Meta is developing the ability to notify emergency services if conversations with Meta AI, involving either teens or adults, suggest someone may be at imminent risk of suicide. The feature extends the company’s existing practices across Facebook and Instagram, where emergency services are alerted when posts indicate a credible suicide risk. According to Meta, the company made more than 19,000 such referrals worldwide last year, helping first responders conduct wellness checks.

Meta also announced improvements to how its AI responds to sensitive conversations. The company consulted more than 75 clinicians specializing in teen mental health, alongside its AI Wellbeing Expert Council, Suicide and Self-Harm Advisory Group, and Youth Advisors.

The clinicians reviewed hundreds of AI responses to prompts related to suicide and self-harm. They assessed whether the responses were appropriate for teenagers and provided recommendations for improvement.

Based on this feedback, Meta is updating AI responses to better acknowledge teenagers’ emotions while directing them to support resources. The company also aims to avoid ending sensitive conversations too abruptly.

Dr. Ji-yeon Lee, Licensed Psychologist in the United States and Professor of Counseling Psychology at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in South Korea, said, “I was struck by the rigor of Meta’s clinical review process. It examined not only immediate responses to suicide and self-harm concerns, but also the broader conversational context, appropriate follow-up, and the varying levels of risk that can exist even within high-risk situations. This kind of expert-informed, scenario-based refinement is essential to making AI experiences safer for teens.”

Furthermore, Meta is extending its stricter Limited Content setting to AI conversations. Teen Accounts are automatically placed in a 13+ content setting, where Meta AI provides age appropriate responses and avoids engaging in sensitive topics such as sexual or romantic conversations or providing alcoholic drink recipes.

Parents who enable the stricter Limited Content setting on Instagram will now have those restrictions applied to Meta AI conversations as well. Under this setting, the AI will decline a broader range of prompts, further reducing the possibility of inappropriate interactions.

With these updates, Meta AI continues to expand its safety measures by combining parental supervision, expert informed AI responses, emergency intervention capabilities, and stricter content controls to better protect teenagers during sensitive conversations.

[9678
10562
9732
post-106469","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-tech-daily-life","tag-meta-ai","contributor-news-desk
["GET
