It also shows how resilient physical and digital infrastructure has become increasingly important as geopolitical events and government policies continue to shape Internet access for millions of users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the report&#8217;s most significant findings was Iran&#8217;s return online after an 88-day Internet blackout. Beginning on May 26, Cloudflare Radar observed Internet traffic gradually returning after a near-total nationwide shutdown that started on February 28. Traffic eventually stabilized at around 59% of pre-shutdown levels, making it one of the quarter&#8217;s largest connectivity restorations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report also found that exam-related Internet shutdowns continued across the Middle East and Africa. Governments in Sudan and Iraq carried out a combined 13 scheduled Internet shutdowns during national examinations. According to Cloudflare, these planned disruptions have become a recurring seasonal trend that has been tracked over several consecutive quarters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, regional conflict continued to affect cloud infrastructure. HTTP traffic to Amazon Web Services&#8217; me-central-1 region in the UAE remained significantly below normal throughout the quarter. The report attributes this to the continued impact of physical damage to data center infrastructure caused by regional conflict and drone strikes. As a result, applications and websites hosted in the region continued to experience disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Natural disasters and power failures also contributed to Internet outages during the quarter. Super Typhoon Sinlaku caused the longest Internet disruption near Guam. In addition, major earthquakes in Venezuela and a nationwide power outage in Tanzania triggered significant declines in Internet traffic that lasted for several hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report further highlighted ongoing infrastructure vulnerabilities around the world. A DNSSEC configuration error temporarily made Germany&#8217;s .de websites inaccessible during May. Separately, a submarine cable cut reduced Internet traffic in Saint Lucia by approximately 60%, demonstrating the continued importance of resilient Internet infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Across the Middle East and Africa, several of the quarter&#8217;s most significant connectivity events were recorded. After nearly three months of widespread disconnection, Internet access in Iran gradually recovered toward historical traffic levels. At the same time, traffic to AWS&#8217;s UAE-based me-central-1 cloud region remained below normal because of earlier physical damage to regional infrastructure, illustrating how conflict can create long-term effects for businesses and digital services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Government-directed Internet shutdowns also remained common in the region. Sudan implemented ten scheduled shutdowns between April 13 and April 23 during national examinations. Iraq followed with three additional exam-related Internet outages in June, reinforcing the continued use of connectivity restrictions during examination periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elsewhere in Africa, Tanzania experienced a sharp decline in Internet traffic after a nationwide power outage in late June. The incident demonstrated how failures in essential infrastructure can quickly lead to widespread digital disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the Middle East and Africa, the report documented Internet disruptions caused by typhoons, earthquakes, power failures, submarine cable cuts, and DNS misconfigurations. Although the causes varied, each event highlighted the dependence of Internet connectivity on reliable power grids, undersea cables, cloud infrastructure, and routing systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cloudflare Radar continues to monitor global Internet traffic and connectivity trends through the <a href=\"https:\/\/radar.cloudflare.com\/outage-center?dateStart=2026-04-01&amp;dateEnd=2026-06-30\">Cloudflare Radar Outage Center<\/a> and regular research reports.
