The new solution allows organizations to identify who is using AI models, what data is being shared, and how much AI activity is costing, all in real time without disrupting existing workflows.

The company also introduced User Insights, a companion feature that learns normal AI usage patterns for every employee and automated system. It alerts IT teams when activity deviates from established behavior, helping organizations detect unusual usage before it becomes a security or cost issue.

Cloudflare said enterprise AI adoption is accelerating, bringing challenges related to rising costs and limited visibility. While AI requests are becoming less expensive individually, employees and automated systems are generating significantly more requests. As a result, organizations are seeing higher AI spending with limited insight into who is driving those costs.

At the same time, sensitive information such as employee names, passwords, and confidential files can unintentionally be shared with external AI providers. Existing tools can set spending limits across an organization, but they often lack the ability to identify individual users responsible for AI requests or monitor the data being transmitted.

“When security is clunky, it becomes a speed bump that slows down innovation. Right now, companies are wary of surprise AI bills or accidental data leaks, so their instinct is to lock down access and restrict what teams can build,” said Dane Knecht, CTO of Cloudflare.

“Connecting our access controls directly to AI Gateway flips that dynamic. Teams get the freedom to work with any AI model they choose. IT gets real-time visibility, guardrails, and the budget controls they actually need,” he added.

The combined capabilities of AI Gateway and User Insights provide several functions for enterprise customers. Organizations can identify exactly which employee or automated system submitted an AI request by integrating AI Gateway with Cloudflare Access. Every request is linked to a verified identity, improving accountability across AI usage.

In addition, User Insights establishes a baseline for each user’s AI activity. If spending or usage patterns suddenly exceed normal levels, IT teams receive alerts that help identify potential misuse or compromised accounts.

The platform also analyzes whether employees are using advanced AI models for simple tasks that could be completed by lower cost alternatives. This helps organizations improve efficiency while reducing unnecessary AI expenses.

Furthermore, companies can enforce identity-based authentication by integrating AI Gateway with their Identity Provider (IdP) and Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) infrastructure. This replaces shared API keys, validates user identity and device posture before requests reach AI model providers, and records verified identities in request logs.

Cloudflare also enables organizations to manage AI traffic through a single control point instead of monitoring individual AI tools separately. This centralized approach provides visibility across AI activity, supports request caching to reduce repeated costs, applies rate limiting to prevent excessive usage, and automatically removes sensitive information such as employee names, passwords, and confidential data before requests are sent to external AI providers.

Commenting on the announcement, Max Baumgarten, Security Engineer at Flexport, said, “Shared API keys make it almost impossible to tell who is using an AI service or apply the access rules we already have for employees. Putting Cloudflare Access in front of AI Gateway gives each request an authenticated identity and lets us use our existing identity policies at the gateway. Our teams can adopt AI tools without creating a separate authentication system for every client.”

With the introduction of AI Gateway and User Insights, Cloudflare aims to help enterprises strengthen AI security, improve visibility into AI usage, manage operational costs, and apply identity-based controls as AI adoption continues to expand.

[147,9621
5964
9732
post-106708","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-artificial-intelligence","category-emerging-technologies","tag-cloudflare","contributor-news-desk
["GET
