The initiative aims to empower youth across the Gulf region. Consequently, it brings together startups, university students, innovators, and ecosystem partners to co-create solutions for sustainable digital transformation and climate action.

The hackathon is open to participants from the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, and Bahrain. Youth aged 18 and above, along with startups, university students, and innovators, are invited to take part. Registration began on August 17.

The Ericsson Sustainability Challenge is built on Hack for Earth’s Dream–Hack–Build methodology. This approach guides participants from identifying sustainability challenges to co-creating solutions. Eventually, it accelerates these ideas toward real-world deployment.

The main objective is to identify scalable sustainability solutions. These solutions will leverage advanced technologies such as AI, IoT, and next-generation connectivity. Furthermore, they support national visions across the region, including the UAE Vision 2031 and Green Agenda. Participants will be challenged to use creativity and technology to address today’s sustainability issues while building smarter, more resilient societies.

Petra Schirren, President of Ericsson Gulf, highlighted the company’s long-standing role in the region’s digital growth. She noted that Ericsson has been a trusted partner in the Gulf’s digital transformation for decades. As the company marks 150 years of innovation, it remains focused on the future. Through the challenge, Ericsson aims to bring together young innovators, universities, and ecosystem partners to co-create solutions powered by 5G, AI, and digitalization.

Kirsty Fitzgibbon, Head of Marketing, Communications & Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility at Ericsson Europe, Middle East and Africa, added that the transition to a sustainable future depends on the next generation. Therefore, the program supports young innovators with mentorship, technology, and industry expertise. This, in turn, helps them turn ideas into solutions with meaningful environmental and social impact.

Ann Molin, Founder and Secretary General of Hack for Earth Foundation and CEO of Hack for Earth AB, said the collaboration creates opportunities for young innovators to transform ideas into lasting solutions. According to her, the program invests in people whose innovations can create impact well beyond the hackathon itself.

Registration for the Ericsson Sustainability Challenge is open through the official Hack for Earth platform. Winning teams will subsequently join the six-month Build for Earth accelerator program. During this time, they will work alongside mentors, industry experts, and Ericsson’s ecosystem partners. As a result, promising ideas can be transformed into scalable, real-world solutions. Building on the success of earlier Hack for Earth programs, several past solutions have evolved into products and ventures now deployed in markets worldwide. Winners will also showcase their ideas at the Ericsson booth at GITEX GLOBAL.

Overall, the Ericsson Sustainability Challenge combines Ericsson’s technology leadership with Hack for Earth’s innovation methodology. Together, the two organizations aim to inspire the next generation of changemakers. In doing so, they hope to demonstrate how connectivity, digitalization, and collaboration can accelerate a more sustainable and resilient future across the UAE and the wider Gulf region.

[10310
2702
9732
post-106862","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-green-tech","tag-sustainability-and-climate-change","contributor-news-desk
["GET
