The product aims to support learning while adding stronger safety protections for teenagers. As a result, users under 18 will now get a different experience than adults.

According to the company, ChatGPT for Teens is meant to help students learn, think critically, and use AI responsibly. Meanwhile, it also gives parents more tools to monitor and manage their teen’s account.

How Teens Are Placed Into the New Experience

OpenAI said its system automatically detects users who may be under 18. In addition, teens can declare their age directly. Once identified as being between 13 and 17, or estimated to be under 18, users are automatically moved into ChatGPT for Teens.

This launch builds on earlier steps by the company. These include parental controls, an updated under-18 Model Spec, a Teen Safety Blueprint, and age-prediction technology. Throughout this work, OpenAI says it has followed four guiding principles: prioritizing teen safety, encouraging real-world support, treating teens like teens, and staying transparent about how its systems behave.

A Focus on Learning, Not Shortcuts

OpenAI designed ChatGPT for Teens to support studying outside the classroom, particularly when help isn’t otherwise available. However, the company says the goal is to keep students actively engaged rather than simply handing them answers.

For example, if a teen asks for a quick answer, the tool will instead guide them through steps to help them reach it themselves. The experience includes several features:

Study Mode – offers guided, step-by-step help using questions rather than direct answers.

Responsible homework reminders – detect when a student may be trying to shortcut an assignment and redirect them to Study Mode.

Quizzes and learning visualizations – help teens test their understanding and see difficult concepts more clearly.

Study Hours – let teens or parents schedule specific times when Study Mode turns on automatically.

Racquel Gibson, a high school math teacher in Miami, said tools like the responsible homework reminder can help fill a gap for students who lack support at home, guiding them toward understanding instead of giving them shortcuts.

OpenAI noted that Study Mode was developed with teachers, scientists, and pedagogy experts. It draws on learning-science research suggesting that active retrieval and self-explanation lead to stronger long-term understanding than passive review. The company also pointed to early internal testing showing gains in student performance.

Notably, ChatGPT for Teens is separate from ChatGPT for Teachers, which continues to give schools and educators secure, institution-managed access to AI.

Partnership With CodeAI

To further prepare students for an AI-driven future, OpenAI announced a partnership with CodeAI. Together, the two organizations plan to give students and educators access to resources that teach how AI works and how to use it responsibly.

CodeAI CEO Karim Meghji said that once students understand how AI works, they can question it, catch its mistakes, and know when not to trust it, turning AI into something they can shape, rather than something that shapes them.

Real Teens Already Building With AI

OpenAI also highlighted examples of teens using its tools for real-world projects. In Virginia, three students, Rushil Kukreja, Arhan Menta, and Nayel Rehman, built WiFind, a system that uses existing Wi-Fi signals to help locate survivors trapped under rubble after disasters. The project began through their volunteer work with a local search-and-rescue group.

Separately, in Texas, Crystal Yang used ChatGPT to help build and scale Audemy, a platform offering audio-based educational games for blind students. The platform has since reached 200,000 users and 50 games.

Safety Protections Built Into the Default Experience

For teen accounts, safety protections are turned on automatically. These safeguards aim to reduce exposure to content that may be harmful or developmentally inappropriate, while still allowing teens to learn and explore.

The protections stem from OpenAI’s Under-18 Principles, which are shaped by developmental science and expert guidance. In practice, this means added restrictions around sensitive areas such as self-harm, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities, and explicit content.

Parents with linked accounts can also set Quiet Hours, adjust certain settings, and receive alerts in specific high-risk situations. OpenAI said it is expanding these alerts to include eating-disorder-related notifications, while limiting the details shared with parents to moments when outside support may be most needed.

Encouraging Healthy, Balanced Use

Beyond content safeguards, ChatGPT for Teens is designed to support healthy habits more broadly. The product includes break reminders that encourage teens to step away from the app, along with consistent cues identifying the tool as AI rather than a person.

OpenAI also updated its under-18 Model Spec to go further than simply blocking romantic or sexual roleplay. Under the new rules, the chatbot should avoid romantic language, avoid encouraging emotional dependence, and avoid implying that it has feelings or consciousness. According to OpenAI, these changes are meant to reinforce real-world relationships rather than replace them.

Additional safety cues include:

Sensitive-image upload reminders, which warn teens before sharing private or personal photos.

Teen-specific onboarding, which introduces safety and learning features from the start.

Limited customization options, such as accent colors and voice variations, designed to keep the experience personal without blurring the line between a tool and a relationship.

Ongoing Research Into Teen Safety

OpenAI said its safeguards are backed by continuous research involving developmental science experts and internal testing. This research helps the company refine its policies and track how well its protections are working over time.

As part of this effort, OpenAI is beginning to publish new evaluations focused on under-18 users within its model system cards. These evaluations assess how its models handle sensitive scenarios, including self-harm, eating disorders, violence, age-restricted goods, and sexual content.

What Comes Next

OpenAI says it plans to keep expanding features under ChatGPT for Teens and to publish updates on what it learns along the way. The company frames the launch as part of a broader effort to let teens learn, create, and explore with AI safely, while ensuring protections match their developmental needs and support healthy, real-world habits over time.

With ChatGPT for Teens now rolling out, OpenAI is positioning the product as a long-term commitment rather than a one-time update, with further safety and learning features expected in the future.

[9617
9812
9732
post-106878","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-news","tag-openai","contributor-news-desk
["GET
