Apple has introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max<\/a>. The new devices bring a redesigned camera system, longer battery life, and a faster processor. Pre-orders begin Saturday, September 12, and the phones will be available in stores from Friday, September 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Camera System With Variable Aperture<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The biggest change in the iPhone 18 Pro lineup is the camera. For the first time, Apple has added a variable aperture to an iPhone. The new 48MP Fusion Main camera uses six laser-cut blades that shift automatically between aperture settings. As a result, the camera adjusts on its own for lighting and depth of field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, creative professionals can now control aperture settings manually. Developers, meanwhile, get access to an API for even finer control within their own apps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, a new sensor and computational imaging pipeline improve overall image quality. Apple<\/a> says this leads to better low-light shots and sharper detail, even at the edges of group photos. Photographic Styles also gain new texture and grain controls, giving users more ways to adjust their photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the video side, Cinematic effects can now be applied after filming to footage shot at up to 60 fps. Time-lapse mode also supports 4K recording in Dolby Vision HDR. Meanwhile, Audio Mix has been upgraded to isolate music and produce clearer voice recordings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new feature called Apple Reference Image has also been introduced. This tool uses the Main camera’s sensor to sign every pixel captured, creating a verifiable version of a photo. Photos app users can then compare this reference image against edited versions, similar to a digital negative. Third-party apps will be able to use this feature through new APIs in iOS, iPadOS, and macOS 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, image metadata and upcoming SynthID support will help users identify AI-generated or AI-edited images, adding another layer of authenticity alongside Apple Reference Image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A20 Pro Chip Boosts Speed and Efficiency<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The iPhone 18 Pro<\/strong> models run on the new A20 Pro chip, built using 2-nanometer process technology. The chip’s 6-core CPU includes integrated Neural Accelerators, while its 7-core GPU is up to 40 percent faster than the previous generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new Dual 16-core Neural Engine also doubles AI processing power compared to A19 Pro. This allows the chip to handle demanding on-device AI tasks and computational photography with less strain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alongside the chip, both models include the N1 wireless chip, supporting Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. A new cellular modem system, called C2, also debuts with this lineup. It offers faster uploads than the previous C1X modem while using 15 percent less energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To manage the added performance, Apple has redesigned the phone’s cooling system. The A20 Pro now sits beside its memory rather than beneath it, which keeps heat away from the memory chip. This design connects directly to a larger vapor chamber, one with three times more surface area than the version used in iPhone 17 Pro. Consequently, sustained performance improves by up to 40 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Battery Life and Charging Improvements<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Battery life has also increased significantly across the lineup. The iPhone 18 Pro offers up to 36 hours of video playback on eSIM-only models, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max reaches up to 45 hours. Fast charging has improved too: the iPhone 18 Pro can charge up to 50 percent in about 15 minutes over a wired connection, or 30 minutes wirelessly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notably, just five minutes of wired charging on the iPhone 18 Pro Max provides roughly seven hours of playback. Based on real-world usage data, the device can also last up to 30 hours on a single charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

iOS 27 and Software Features<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alongside the new hardware, Apple is releasing iOS 27 on Monday, September 14. The update brings design refinements, more personalization options for Liquid Glass, and expanded parental controls that let parents manage what children see and who they can contact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new feature, iPhone Handoff, also lets users switch between two iPhones using the same phone number, provided their carrier supports it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple Intelligence will roll out with iOS 27 as well, supporting a range of languages including English, French, German, Japanese, and Korean, among others. Siri AI will launch in beta form, initially supporting English, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish support expected in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

eSIM Support and Environmental Standards<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

eSIM-only models of the iPhone 18 Pro<\/strong> will be available in several markets, including the U.S., Canada, Japan, Mexico, and Saudi Arabia. Because these models skip the physical SIM tray, Apple has used the extra space for a larger battery, adding roughly two hours of additional video playback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the environmental side, both new iPhones are made with 40 percent recycled content overall. This includes 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery and 85 percent recycled aluminum in the enclosure. Manufacturing also relies on 50 percent renewable energy across the supply chain, continuing Apple’s push toward full carbon neutrality by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
