New research shows that AI governance has become a pressing concern for organizations across EMEA, as unmanaged AI agents increasingly interact with sensitive corporate data. The study, commissioned by data and AI security firm Veeam<\/a> and conducted by independent polling company Censuswide, surveyed 1,000 enterprise IT, data, and security decision-makers at companies with 500 or more employees. Respondents came from the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and the Middle East and Africa, including Turkey, Israel, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya. Data was collected between April 21 and April 27, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to the findings, 70% of organizations admit that automated AI workflows are interacting with sensitive corporate data without full oversight. Meanwhile, 67% report that employees are creating autonomous AI workflows that IT teams cannot fully track. As a result, businesses are grappling with what researchers describe as a “shadow agent” crisis, in which AI tools operate outside formal governance structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Consequently, this lack of oversight is not just a technical problem. It is also reshaping boardroom dynamics. Nearly one-third of organizations, 32%, say that regulatory pressure is already creating tension or conflict among executives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Furthermore, new corporate accountability laws are placing personal legal responsibility on C-level executives for cyber resilience and regulatory compliance. The research found that 58% of surveyed enterprises now operate under these laws. However, 12% of respondents said individual responsibilities remain shared and unclear, adding further complexity to compliance efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This growing accountability is taking a toll on leadership teams. Specifically, 40% of executives say they are concerned about personal liability or consequences, while 39% report increased board-level scrutiny. In addition, 37% say the pressure has increased personal stress or anxiety, and 32% say it has created tension with fellow executives. On a more positive note, 45% say increased accountability has actually improved alignment and focus at the leadership level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
