Data sovereignty failures could cost executives their jobs, according to new research from Everpure<\/a> (NYSE: P).<\/p>\n\n\n\n The research shows that 88% of large enterprise C-suite leaders believe a failure could cost them their jobs. Meanwhile, 91% worry about financial and reputational damage to their organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, 64% of organizations operate without a formal strategy in place. Everpure describes this as a “sovereignty gap.” It exposes a vulnerability in modern enterprise data management, especially in today’s uncertain geopolitical environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sovereignty has become a defining business risk. Challenges range from foreign-mandated data exfiltration to potential Denial of Service (DoS) incidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Everpure’s Global Data Sovereignty Report 2026 surveyed 2,100 enterprise leaders across eight countries. The goal was to compare strategic intent with real operational readiness. The results reveal a stark divide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n First, concern is high. About 90% of organizations recognize data sovereignty as a business concern. Most expect severe financial or leadership consequences if a failure occurs. In addition, 85% are willing to compromise on advanced features and functionality to work with a local or sovereign provider. Furthermore, 40% already limit their use of SaaS providers that rely on non-domestic infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Readiness, however, lags behind. Despite these concerns, 64% have no formal strategy in place. Also, 62% lack full visibility into who can access, control and manage their data. Another 56% have no mitigation plans for geopolitical data exfiltration or service disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Skills and support are also gaps. Some 56% admit they lack the skills and capacity to deliver sovereignty initiatives. At the same time, 36% face challenges with executive buy-in. Notably, only 9% say protection from extraterritorial data access is a top priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The findings point to a clear gap between executive recognition of risk and operational readiness. Many companies still treat sovereignty as a routine cybersecurity or compliance exercise. As a result, they fail to secure control of their data. They also cannot defend against geopolitical threats that could lead to significant consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Senior leaders understand their jobs are on the line over data sovereignty, yet many are still focused on the wrong risks,” said Alex McMullan, Chief Technology Officer, International, Everpure. “Sovereignty is not simply about where data is stored, but having full visibility and control over it through modern data management. Who can access data, which jurisdictions apply and whether business-critical data or services could be disrupted are key questions every organization should be asking.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n Analysts see a similar shift. “Digital sovereignty has moved from a compliance conversation to a critical board-level concern,” said Rahiel Nasir, Research Director and Lead Analyst, Worldwide Digital Sovereignty, IDC. “The challenge for executives is not just about knowing where their data are hosted. It is about being in total control of all data access and transfers (including all metadata), guaranteed protection against extra-territorial data requests, and managing IT and vendor risks in the light of geopolitical uncertainties.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n To close the gap, Everpure recommends “sovereignty by design.” A successful strategy, it says, requires moving from passive risk recognition to targeted operational execution. Organizations can follow a set of interconnected steps to get there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This model is business-driven and risk-aware. Sovereignty controls and governance are applied according to the risk of each data set, application and workload. Consequently, the focus shifts from national sovereignty to corporate sovereignty. That approach is based on an organization’s specific risk appetite and view on regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The model also lets businesses protect critical assets from key sovereignty risks. Importantly, they can do so without sacrificing the flexibility, innovation or scale of global SaaS and cloud<\/a> providers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Everpure Data Intelligence supports this model.
