Danish government announcement<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\nAccording to the ministry, unauthorized parties gained access to names, addresses and CPR numbers by misusing a Danish private company’s lawful access to search information in the CPR system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The affected records cover approximately 8.8 million registered people. The CPR system currently contains around 11 million registered records, including people who are living in Denmark, have moved abroad or are deceased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The government said the unauthorized access did not include the names and addresses of people who have registered for name and address protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
CPR administration first identified irregular activity in the system on the evening of October 2. The activity had occurred during September, and authorities determined over the following weekend that unauthorized parties had accessed the personal information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The private company’s access to the CPR system has since been stopped. CPR administration is working with specialists and relevant authorities to establish what happened and how the access was misused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The incident is also being reported to Denmark’s Data Protection Agency, Datatilsynet, while police are investigating the case with relevant authorities. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not identified who was behind the unauthorized access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Christina Egelund, Denmark’s Minister for Research, Education and Digitalisation, described the incident as serious and said she had informed the Danish Parliament’s Business and Digitalisation Committee. She has also ordered a thorough security review of the CPR system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The government has already introduced measures intended to reduce the risk of similar incidents. Further action may follow once the security review and investigation provide more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Authorities are also advising citizens to remain alert. The ministry said people should not provide passwords or other confidential information through phone calls, emails or similar requests, even if the person contacting them knows their name, address or CPR number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Citizens can seek guidance through Denmark’s Sikkerdigital.dk service and the Cyberhotline for Digital Security<\/a>. The hotline has extended its opening hours to 8am to midnight during the response period.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe investigation will determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident and whether additional measures are required.
