In\nfull year 2019, smartphone sales declined by 1.0%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c2019 ended a little better than expected, due to slightly improved performances from North America and emerging Asia\/Pacific,\u201d said Anshul Gupta, senior research analyst at <a href=\"https:\/\/techxmedia.com\/tag\/Gartner\/\">Gartner<\/a>. \u201cHowever, India, which sold 151,915 million units, overtook the U.S. to become the No. 2 country for smartphone sales in 2019. China maintained the lead, with sales of 390,780 million smartphones over the full year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apple and Xiaomi were the only vendors in the top five to achieve growth in the fourth quarter of 2019. Even with a decline in sales, Samsung held on to the No. 1 position with 17.3% market share. Apple also performed\nstrongly in certain mature and developing markets, such as the U.K., France,\nGermany, Brazil and India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apple plans to launch its first\n5G smartphone in the third quarter of 2020. This will encourage users to\nupgrade in countries where 5G network services are available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Xiaomi\u2019s smartphone sales totaled\n32.4 million units in the fourth quarter of 2019 \u2014 a 16.5% increase, year over\nyear. \u201cThis strong performance enabled Xiaomi to overtake OPPO and take the No.\n4 spot,\u201d said Mr. Gupta. \u201cThe price and performance of Redmi models drove Xiaomi\u2019s\nsmartphone sales growth, and the company did particularly well in emerging Asia\/Pacific.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In China,\nXiaomi started increasing its smartphone prices to increase profits. The\noutbreak of the COVID-19 virus in\nChina presents some challenges to retail-focused vendors such as OPPO and Vivo,\nbut creates opportunity for Xiaomi, which has been expanding its online channel\nstrategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi Grew in 2019, Even as Total Smartphone Sales Declined<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite a small (0.5%) year-over-year contraction in its smartphone\nsales in the fourth quarter of 2019, Samsung maintained its No. 1 position in the\nglobal ranking for 2019. To attract price conscious buyers\nof premium smartphones, it launched the Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note 10 Lite\nin early January 2019. In addition, it recently announced a new foldable\nsmartphone to counter the threat from Huawei. \u201cThe fierce battle between Samsung and Huawei in the\nfoldable phone market will be interesting to follow this year, as each vendor\ntakes a different approach,\u201d said Mr. Gupta. \u201cSamsung has switched from a horizontal to a vertical fold in the Galaxy\nZ Flip and reduced this phone\u2019s size and price. Huawei has launched the Mate Xs\n\u2014 with Huawei Mobile Services now accessible via the Huawei AppGallery worldwide\nand increased its price.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Huawei experienced the highest growth in 2019 with an overall\nannual increase of 18.6%. This helped it secure the No. 2 spot for the year,\nahead of Apple.
