A five-phase strategic\nand systematic approach to strengthen the resilience of organizations\u2019 current\nbusiness models is key to business continuity during the coronavirus<\/a> pandemic, according to Gartner, Inc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCompanies tend to have traditional business continuity strategies and plans that focus on the continuity of the resources and processes but omit the business model,\u201d said Daniel Sun<\/a>, research vice president at Gartner. \u201cHowever, the business model itself can be a threat to continuity of operations in external events, such as the global outbreak of COVID-19<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CIOs can play a key\nrole in the process of raising current business model resilience to ensure ongoing\noperations, since digital technologies and capabilities can influence every\naspect of business models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phase 1 \u2014\nDefine the business model: <\/strong>Facing the contingency of COVID-19 outbreaks<\/a>, companies should first\nfocus on their core customers that are essential to their continuity of\noperations, and then refer to a process of\ndefining their current business models by asking questions focused on their\ncustomers, value propositions, capabilities and financial models. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although CIOs do not\nnormally lead the process of defining business models, they should proactively\nengage with senior business leaders to run through 10 key questions regarding\ncurrent business models. This is foundational for CIOs to actively participate\nin modifying current business models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phase 2 \u2014\nIdentify uncertainties: <\/strong>This step can be carried out through a strength,\nweakness, opportunity and threat (SWOT) analysis, or by brainstorming. Given\nthe wide range of uncertainties and threats, this step can benefit from a\nheterogeneous group of participants with diverse backgrounds and interests,\nparticularly where IT is normally involved. Companies should focus on the risks\nthat the uncertainty poses to the components of the business model. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCIOs should\nparticipate in, or coordinate, the brainstorming sessions to identify any\nuncertainties from COVID-19 outbreaks,\u201d said Mr. Sun. \u201cCIOs can share some of\nIT\u2019s potential uncertainties and threats, such as issues with IT\ninfrastructure, applications and software systems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phase 3 \u2014\nAssess the impact: <\/strong>Multidisciplinary members should form a project team to\nassess, or even quantify, the impact of the identified uncertainties. CIOs can\nprovide the potential impacts from an IT perspective. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phase 4 \u2014 Design changes: <\/strong>At this point in the process, the emphasis is\nto develop tentative strategies rather than estimate their feasibility.\nSelecting and executing changes will follow in the next phase. CIOs and IT\nshould leverage digital technologies and capabilities to facilitate the\ndesigned changes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phase 5 \u2014 Execute changes: <\/strong>The decision on which changes to execute is\nprincipally a decision for senior leadership teams. The strategies for changes\ndefined in Phase 4 provide essential input for this decision process. Senior\nleadership teams should select the strategies they feel most compelling to\nimplement, which is often based on both economic calculations and intuition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOnce senior leadership\nteams select the business and IT change initiatives, CIOs should apply an agile\napproach in executing the initiatives. For example, they can form an agile\n(product) team of multidisciplinary team members, enabling the alignment\nbetween business and IT and ensuring delivery speed and quality,\u201d said Mr. Sun.\n\u201cIn crises such as the COVID-19 outbreak, agility, speed and quality are\ncrucial for enabling the continuity of operations.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
