With a focus on empowering research
institutions and enterprises to handle larger workloads, HPE accelerates discovery and innovation. The
company proudly holds the distinction of building all three verified exascale supercomputers in the world.

El Capitan, developed for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory (LLNL) in collaboration with AMD, has achieved 1.742 exaflops, making it the world’s
most powerful supercomputer according to the November 2024 TOP500 list. It also ranks among the top
20 most energy-efficient systems. El Capitan joins two other HPE-built exascale systems: Frontier at Oak
Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), which ranks second at 1.353 exaflops, and Aurora at Argonne
National Laboratory (ANL), ranking third, built in partnership with Intel. These three systems collectively
represent more than 5.75 exaflops of performance, solidifying HPE’s leadership in supercomputing.

HPE-built systems dominate the TOP500 list, with seven of the top 10 supercomputers powered by HPE
Cray Supercomputing EX systems. These systems feature the industry’s first 100% fanless direct liquid
cooling architecture, which significantly enhances energy efficiency while delivering unmatched
performance.
HPE’s contributions to supercomputing extend globally, driving advancements in AI and scientific
discovery. El Capitan is designed to maintain the United States’ competitive edge in national security and
accelerate research in areas such as nuclear science, materials discovery, and fusion energy. Frontier,
the first exascale system launched in 2022, supports breakthroughs in cancer research, drug discovery,
nuclear fusion, and supernovae. Aurora leverages AI to advance research in aircraft design, cancer
treatments, and sustainable energy, with groundbreaking work in neuron mapping and protein design.

HPE’s innovative liquid cooling solutions are redefining energy efficiency in supercomputing, reducing
energy consumption by up to 94% compared to traditional air-cooled systems. This sustainability-first
approach makes HPE-built systems among the most energy-efficient supercomputers globally.

HPE’s ongoing partnerships with research institutions and enterprises worldwide are driving
breakthroughs in agriculture, finance, healthcare, energy, climate science, cybersecurity, and national
defense. As a leader in high-performance computing and AI, HPE remains committed to enabling
organizations to push the boundaries of discovery and innovation while fostering sustainable
advancements.
