Seagate announces new converged storage Exos AP with AMD EPYC processors

The Seagate Technology Holdings plc comes with a new Exos Application Platform (AP) that uses AMD EPYC processors from the second generation. As we know managing large data sets is extremely difficult and expensive. The end-to-end compute and storage platform is efficient, scalable, and inexpensive, delivering integrated computation and storage in a single enclosure that optimizes rack space use, power efficiency, heat dissipation, and storage density.

“Data is often discarded because the cost of keeping it is immediate, despite significant potential future payoffs,” said Ken Claffey, Senior Vice President, Systems at Seagate.

He added, “The new Exos AP with AMD EPYC processors can help IT professionals build a cost-effective data management strategy that intelligently captures, stores, and analyzes data today and leverages it in the future to drive success.”

With the ever-increasing boom in data generation, the demand for innovative storage solutions is at an all-time high. Enterprise data is predicted to grow at a rate of 42.2 percent over the next two years, according to a report commissioned by Seagate and done by the research firm IDC, Rethink Data. IDC’s survey also discovered that just 32% of data given to businesses being put to use. The remaining 68 percent is not leveraged in any way.

With the all-new AP-BV-1 controller, Exos AP solutions provide excellent compute and storage performance in a single chassis. The system provides high availability or controller partitioning with dual AMD EPYC processor-based controllers, as well as the flexibility of a common controller slot that allows connecting to additional EXOS E SAS expansion units in matching chassis. The architecture is well-suited to today’s and tomorrow’s CPUs and storage capacities.

AMD EPYC CPUs combine a number of characteristics to assist meet the growing need for sophisticated storage solutions. AMD EPYC processors in the Exos AP Enterprise Data Storage System Controller have core counts of 8, 12, or 16 for varied degrees of performance. The CPUs also include dedicated PCIe 4 lanes for 200GbE network access, as well as a high-bandwidth SAS controller for speedier HDD and SSD response. Finally, the Exos AP system has a motherboard that enables 25GbE for base I/O, which is generally an extra cost on other competitor platforms.
