Share

The Global Ultra-Broadband Forum 2023 has sparked extensive discussions within the industry, aiming to construct an intelligent world under the banner of a ‘Gigabit Society.’ Organized by Huawei with support from the UN Broadband Commission, this forum brought together global carriers, partners, standards organizations, regulators, and leaders from various industries to explore strategies for building ultra-broadband (UBB) target networks. The focus was on enhancing UBB network performance to fully unlock its potential in the era of intelligent connectivity.

Themed “Connecting Intelligence for New Growth,” the forum served as a platform for experts and insiders to share technological insights, experience innovations firsthand, and engage in profound conversations with industry stakeholders. Emphasizing the need for productivity-centric UBB target networks, discussions delved into the evolving landscape of intelligent services, driven by the increasing integration of AI into daily life and work.

Throughout the past year, the UBB industry has made significant strides in formulating standards and advancing key technologies. However, the rise of immersive and intelligent services, fueled by AI, has placed higher demands on UBB networks. The forum addressed these challenges, serving as a vital annual event in the fixed network industry.

Regional leaders, including Mr. Bocar BA and H.E. Eng. Mohamed Ben Amor, shared their visions during the forum, contributing to the theme “10 Giga Digital Infrastructure for Accelerating a Robust & Sustainable Digital Economy.” A leadership panel, co-hosted with the SAMENA Council, discussed policies and actions necessary to accelerate the development of 10-Gigabit networks across the Middle East & Central Asia. The benefits of 10-gigabit digital infrastructure for the region’s digital economy and sustainable development goals were highlighted.

The panelists, featuring industry leaders like Cevat Yerli, Alex Lee, Mohammed Bin Ali, and Lin Yanqing, explored the policy requirements, stakeholder involvement, and collaborative efforts essential for ultra-broadband development. Lin Yanqing from Huawei emphasized the significance of 5.5G, highlighting its potential to upgrade network capabilities and support a 10 Gbps experience, enabling native intelligence for numerous services.

Bocar A. Ba, CEO of Samena Telecommunications Council, underscored the importance of maximizing the true potential of 5G and the need for new capital to support network transformation. The forum recognized key contributors to 5G development through the SAMENA LEAD awards.

Huawei expressed its belief in ultra-broadband networks as essential infrastructure for intelligent communities and businesses. The company aims to go beyond traditional internet connectivity, aspiring to build an intelligent world through enhanced connectivity. A 10Gbps network is seen as the foundation for a 10-Gigabit city, with Wi-Fi 7 technologies facilitating efficient connectivity for enterprises.

The forum marked a milestone in advocating for the digital infrastructure shift to support the region’s digital economy and sustainable development goals. Acknowledging the progress in the Gigabit and 10 Giga eras, it emphasized the crucial role of governments in releasing guidelines and standards to accelerate this transformative process. The discussions underscored the forum’s significance in shaping the future of ultra-broadband networks and supporting the region’s broader developmental goals.
