Varuna generously shares her journey into the tech world, her valuable insights on gender diversity, noteworthy career achievements, and offers advice for aspiring women in the tech field. Varuna’s narrative serves as a testament to the ever-evolving tech landscape, highlighting the synergy between innovation and inclusivity.

TECHx: Can you share a bit about your background and how you became interested in the tech industry?

Varuna: My educational journey led me to earn a degree in engineering from the University of Minnesota, followed by a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a focus on Marketing.

I began my professional journey in the technology sector, gaining valuable experience at renowned companies like Infosys and Lehman Brothers, which played a pivotal role in sparking my passion for technology. The fusion of my engineering background and MBA in Marketing naturally led me towards a career in technology, specifically within the marketing vertical. This transition allowed me to leverage both my theoretical knowledge and practical experience, providing a ground for innovation and growth in the dynamic world of technology.

TECHx: Diversity and inclusion are important topics in tech. How do you think the industry has evolved in terms of gender diversity, and what more needs to be done?

Varuna: Women have definitely come a long way and paved our paths in the Tech industry. Today you see many incredible female role models in tech industry who are leading the way for future generations of women.

It is crucial to support and empower women at all levels and help them achieve their full potential by creating a more inclusive and diverse workplace, that drives innovation, creativity and better outcomes for the community. Being a woman in the tech sector today is both empowering and challenging.

Currently, we observe promising trends in terms of gender diversity, with more women entering tech roles and assuming leadership positions. Yet, challenges persist, including gender bias, pay gaps, and limited career progression opportunities.

To address these challenges, various initiatives and organizations have emerged, fostering mentorship, education, and advocacy for women in tech. These efforts are crucial steps towards creating more inclusive and innovative workplaces

TECHx: Can you share a particularly memorable success story or project that you’re proud of in your tech career?

Varuna: One of my key career achievements has been establishing myself as a trusted advisor to businesses by positioning marketing as a business enabler. In a previous role, I identified a significant gap between direct and ecosystem marketing due to lack of collaboration and information exchange among teams. To address this, I initiated a pilot program, working closely with 2-3 key partners in different countries. We held joint planning sessions, considering timing, budgets, and approvals. I ensured early involvement of global, finance, business, and ecosystem stakeholders, providing streamlined assets and templates. Regular checkpoints and idea exchanges kept everyone aligned. The results were outstanding, as the project not only won an innovation award, but also paved the way for future collaborations. The initiative created a best practice framework, increased Net Promoter Score (NPS), and, most importantly, achieved significant business success

TECHx: What advice would you give to young women who are considering a career in technology?

Varuna: The world of technology is constantly evolving, with new advancements in next-generation technologies, making a career in this field is incredibly exciting. To thrive, it’s essential to embrace this ongoing learning process and not shy away from advocating for yourself. I encourage women at any stage of their career, whether they are just beginning or seasoned veterans, to actively seek out a mentor within the tech industry; their guidance can be an invaluable asset as you navigate your career. Cultivate a robust professional network and extend your support to others. Always remember the importance of paying it forward.

TECHx: The tech industry is known for its rapid evolution. How do you stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies?

Varuna: Staying up to speed with the latest trends and technology is not only a choice, but a requirement in the ever-changing tech business. In order to accomplish this, I use a diverse strategy to continuous learning. I prioritize taking online courses, attend webinars, and workshops to learn new skills and gain knowledge. In addition, I stay informed by following trustworthy tech news sources, blogs, and magazines that provide real-time updates on industry trends. My active participation in professional networks, both online and offline, enables me to share ideas and experiences with colleagues who share my interest in technology. I attend technology conferences and events to obtain first-hand knowledge about upcoming technologies and to network with industry leaders. Having a mentor in the technology business can be quite beneficial, especially when navigating complex and rapidly evolving technologies.

Having said this there is no one size that fits all.

TECHx: Outside of your tech-related work, what are some of your hobbies or interests? How do you find a balance between your professional and personal life?
