In a concerted effort, key governmental bodies in the UAE have united to promote synergy between the cutting-edge technology and space sectors. This partnership is focused on harnessing emerging technological breakthroughs and advancements to combat the pressing global issue of climate change.

The Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT), the UAE Space Agency, and the organizing committee for COP28, operating under the auspices of the Office of the UAE Special Envoy for Climate Change (OSECC), have joined forces. Their collective aim is to encourage entities within the advanced technology and space realms to contribute their innovations toward climate action through participation in the Technology and Innovation Hub at COP28 – an upcoming conference projected to be the most inclusive of its kind.

This collaboration seeks to enrich the diverse ecosystem of COP28, uniting major technology corporations, international institutions, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and space agencies to facilitate collaborative measures in line with climate objectives. By rallying global technology and industrial firms, the initiative envisions the UAE as a nucleus for the creation of novel technologies that can drive sustainable industrial progress, address climate change, and expedite the process of decarbonization.

Sarah Al Amiri, Minister of State for Public Education and Advanced Technology, emphasized, “Advanced technology and space sectors represent more than just integral components of national economies; they stand as engines of innovation and pivotal enablers of achieving net zero emissions. This collaboration serves to rally stakeholders of all scales in advance of COP28, wherein MoIAT and UAESA will converge the UAE’s domestic and worldwide innovation and space community at the Technology and Innovation Hub.”

Al Amiri further remarked, “The UAE government remains unwavering in its commitment to making COP28 an all-encompassing conference that culminates in tangible actions. COP28 is set to embrace a full spectrum of societal and economic representatives. As government knowledge partners during the event, MoIAT and UAESA are prepared to welcome global innovation ecosystem members, including startups and SMEs, to showcase their climate-oriented technologies and innovations at the Technology and Innovation Hub.”

Ambassador Majid Al Suwaidi, Director-General and Special Representative of COP28, emphasized, “The Technology and Innovation Hub will serve as an inclusive platform for partners demonstrating the determination and capacity to contribute to our collective future. Leveraging technological solutions remains the linchpin to expediting the transition to renewable energy, building more sophisticated early warning systems, bolstering localized adaptation, and enhancing the resilience of cities, industries, and communities.”

This partnership seeks to promote collaboration in areas of shared interest, further amplifying joint endeavors and aligning the outcomes of the industry and space sectors with COP28’s overarching goals. By fostering cooperation, the initiative endeavors to accelerate progress towards the objectives outlined in the Paris Agreement, solidifying the UAE’s position as a global hub for innovative climate technologies.

MoIAT, the UAE Space Agency, and the COP28 organizing committee, through OSECC, will also facilitate the exchange of knowledge to expedite the development of advanced technological solutions in the lead-up to the conference, contributing to the lasting legacy of this international event.
