Cisco has highlighted the critical need for enhanced cybersecurity measures as artificial intelligence (AI) continues to evolve, posing new threats to the digital landscape. The company advocates for a collaborative effort between technology companies and governments to address the growing risks associated with AI-powered cyber threats and disinformation.

In its recent Cybersecurity Readiness Index, Cisco reported that 85% of respondents from the UAE anticipate a cybersecurity incident within the next 12 to 24 months. The report also revealed that 52% of affected businesses incurred costs of at least $300,000, highlighting the financial impact of these threats.

Fady Younes, Managing Director for Cybersecurity at Cisco Middle East & Africa, stated that the increasing volume of data and the sophistication of AI-driven disinformation necessitate responsible actions from companies developing AI technologies. Cisco is committed to transparency, fairness, accountability, reliability, security, and privacy, benefiting both organizations and governments.

Cisco emphasizes the need for a united front to tackle the complex challenges posed by AI-enabled disinformation. The company points out that advancements in AI make it easier and cheaper to manipulate digital content, highlighting the urgency of developing advanced AI detection systems, content authentication, and provenance mechanisms.

Looking ahead, Cisco anticipates significant progress in creating reliable AI detection systems and risk mitigation strategies. These efforts are crucial for protecting against threats such as cloned voices, deepfakes, and social media bots. Improved AI detection tools and authentication mechanisms will enhance transparency and accountability in digital content creation.

Public-private partnerships are expected to play a key role in combating AI-generated disinformation, with potential sanctions against perpetrators. Cisco urges businesses to strengthen their data protection and threat detection capabilities, emphasizing continuous monitoring, vulnerability assessments, and regular security updates.

As AI continues to shape the digital landscape, Cisco advocates for transparency and a comprehensive approach to safeguard democratic values and individual rights. The company calls for a rethinking of IT infrastructure, focusing on early detection and response to potential threats.

Cisco’s commitment to responsible AI use and robust cybersecurity measures underscores the importance of shared responsibility in managing the risks associated with AI technologies. Through collaboration between the public and private sectors, Cisco aims to create a safer online environment and ensure compliance with emerging regulations.
