Bayanat AI PLC (ADX: BAYANAT) and Al Yah Satellite Communications Company PJSC (ADX: Yahsat) have announced the successful launch of the UAE’s first Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite. This milestone, achieved in collaboration with ICEYE, marks a significant advancement in the UAE’s Earth Observation capabilities. The satellite was launched on August 16, 2024, aboard SpaceX’s Transporter 11 from Vandenberg Space Force Base, California, USA.

The SAR satellite, owned by Bayanat and launched in partnership with Yahsat, is now operational and has begun transmitting data. This satellite is the first of a comprehensive SAR constellation aimed at delivering high-resolution, persistent monitoring solutions, capable of capturing images regardless of weather conditions or time of day. The satellite’s advanced SAR technology provides unparalleled imaging capabilities, covering vast geographical areas with high precision.

This launch represents a key development in the UAE’s space ambitions, aligning with the country’s National Space Strategy 2030. It underscores Bayanat and Yahsat’s commitment to enhancing the UAE’s sovereign satellite capabilities and fostering local talent in the space sector. The partnership between Bayanat, Yahsat, and ICEYE is set to play a pivotal role in the future of the UAE’s space initiatives, positioning the country as a leader in space technology and innovation.

Hasan Al Hosani, Managing Director of Bayanat, highlighted the significance of this achievement: “The launch of our first satellite is a defining moment for Bayanat and the UAE. This milestone strengthens our position as a leader in AI-powered geospatial analytics and marks the beginning of our journey as Space42.”

Ali Al Hashemi, Group CEO of Yahsat, added: “The successful launch of our SAR satellite is a testament to the synergies between Bayanat and Yahsat. This achievement is a significant step in our expansion as a multi-orbit satellite operator and solidifies our role as pioneers in the UAE’s space sector.”

The SAR satellite launch is part of a broader Earth Observation Space Program initiated in 2023. The program aims to build a SAR satellite constellation, enhancing the UAE’s ability to provide near real-time, high-definition geospatial insights for various applications, including disaster management, maritime surveillance, and smart mobility. This strategic initiative will significantly boost the UAE’s capabilities in space technology and geospatial intelligence.
