Dubai Police, Oxford Nanopore Collaborate on Forensic Science and Genomics

Dubai Police has entered into a strategic partnership with Oxford Nanopore Technologies, based in Oxford, UK, to enhance education, training, and research in forensic science and genomics. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by His Excellency Major General Ahmad Thani Bin Ghalita, Director of the General Department of Forensic Sciences and Criminology at Dubai Police, and Phil Watkins, Vice President of Finance at Oxford Nanopore Technologies plc.

Major General Bin Ghalita highlighted that the MoU underscores Dubai Police’s dedication to advancing research and development, as well as the exchange of knowledge across forensic science and criminology. He emphasized that this collaboration will significantly improve laboratory performance and the capabilities of Dubai Police’s forensic departments.

Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Mohamed Almarri, Director of the Genome Centre at the General Department of Forensic Sciences and Criminology, noted that the agreement will facilitate the integration of advanced genomics expertise, reinforcing Dubai Police’s leadership in applying cutting-edge technologies.

Tonya McSherry, VP Commercial EMEAI at Oxford Nanopore Technologies, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating: “We are excited to collaborate with Dubai Police to implement Oxford Nanopore’s state-of-the-art sequencing technology. This partnership marks a significant advancement in the use of rapid, accurate, and accessible DNA sequencing to bolster public safety and health security. By merging our innovative platform with the expertise of Dubai Police, we aim to set new benchmarks in forensic science and pathogen detection.”

The MoU details joint activities, including training in genomics, nanopore technology, and other technical aspects to achieve the partnership’s goals. This collaboration represents a significant step forward in leveraging advanced technology to enhance forensic and public health capabilities.
