Worldwide PC shipments totaled 62.9 million units in the third quarter of 2024, reflecting a 1.3% decline from the same period in 2023, as per preliminary results from Gartner, Inc. This downturn follows three consecutive quarters of year-over-year growth in the PC market.

Mikako Kitagawa, Director Analyst at Gartner, stated, “Despite a full lineup of Windows-based AI PCs for both Arm and x86, the demand for PCs was not significantly boosted, as buyers have yet to recognize their clear benefits or business value.” Kitagawa further noted that the anticipated demand for a Windows PC refresh—prompted by the end of Windows 10 support in 2025—did not fully materialize during Q3, partly due to economic challenges in certain regions.

Looking ahead, Kitagawa expressed optimism: “Despite the year-over-year decline, the PC market remains on a recovery track. We expect demand to increase towards the end of 2024, with robust growth anticipated in 2025, coinciding with a peak in PC refreshes.”

In contrast, the EMEA PC market experienced its first quarter of decline after three quarters of growth, decreasing by 1.5%. Kitagawa noted temporary hurdles to spending in EMEA, including political elections and major sporting events that distracted consumers from technology purchases.

The Asia/Pacific market saw a significant 8.5% decline year-over-year, primarily due to weak demand in China, which recorded a 10% drop in PC shipments.

Japan, however, recorded its first double-digit year-over-year PC shipments growth in three years, driven by timely PC refreshes ahead of the Windows 10 support deadline in 2025. Kitagawa concluded that while economic conditions remained unstable, the demand from large businesses played a crucial role in this growth.
