At GITEX 2024, Huawei introduced the HUAWEI WATCH D 2, the world’s first smartwatch capable of 24-hour wrist-based ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). This groundbreaking device, resulting from over a decade of research in blood pressure technology, marks a significant advancement in wrist-based health monitoring. Following its initial unveiling at a launch event in Barcelona last September, the HUAWEI WATCH D 2 is now available in the UAE for AED 1,599.
Visitors flocked to the Huawei booth to experience live demonstrations of the HUAWEI WATCH D 2, where they received comprehensive overviews of the smartwatch’s innovative features. Attendees reported overwhelmingly positive feedback, particularly regarding the blood pressure monitoring capabilities, which many found invaluable for daily health management.
In collaboration with the Dubai Health Innovation and Digital Health team, Huawei is set to conduct a validation study on the effectiveness of its ambulatory blood pressure monitoring technology. This study will evaluate the smartwatch’s capabilities in accurately measuring blood pressure through its advanced wrist-based wearables.
The HUAWEI WATCH D 2 features a sleek, compact design that allows users to monitor their blood pressure easily and conveniently. Utilizing an inflatable airbag, the smartwatch measures blood pressure at designated intervals throughout the day. Users can set smart reminders for measurements and initiate readings simply by raising their wrist, accommodating various measurement scenarios—standing, sitting, or reclining. Additionally, the watch automatically tracks blood pressure during sleep with minimal disruption.
Hypertension is a pressing health issue in the UAE. According to the UAE’s national health survey (2017-2018), approximately 28.8% of adults in the country suffer from high blood pressure, a figure that rises to over 41% for individuals aged 30-79, as noted in a recent World Health Organization report. This condition is a significant contributor to cardiovascular diseases and premature deaths in the region.
Recognized as the gold standard for diagnosing and managing hypertension, ABPM is recommended by leading health guidelines, including the ISH 2020 Global Hypertension Practice Guidelines, the 2017 ACC/AHA Blood Pressure Guidelines, and the 2018 ESC/ESH Guidelines for the management of Arterial Hypertension.
For individuals dealing with hypertension, the HUAWEI WATCH D 2 assists in identifying blood pressure circadian rhythms and detecting abnormal nighttime declines. Even those without hypertension can benefit, gaining valuable insights into their health risk profiles and enabling proactive health measures.
The HUAWEI WATCH D 2 serves as a transformative tool for millions, offering real-time, continuous blood pressure monitoring that allows users to track their health on the go. In light of the rising prevalence of hypertension, Huawei aims to provide an accessible tool that empowers individuals to take control of their health.
In addition to ABPM, the HUAWEI WATCH D 2 includes features like Health Glance and Health Community, enabling users to monitor key health indicators and stay informed about their loved ones’ well-being. This comprehensive health ecosystem equips both users and their families with essential tools for long-term health monitoring.
