The cybersecurity landscape in the Middle East is undergoing a transformative shift as organizations adapt to the dual challenge of leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) while combating increasingly sophisticated AI-driven cyberattacks. This critical topic will be explored at the Intersec 2025 Security Leaders’ Summit, scheduled for January 14-16, 2025.

Fawaz Alsumaim, Head of the Anti-Internet and Information Systems Crime Division at the Ministry of Interior in Bahrain, will discuss the emergence of next-generation hackers and the implications for cybersecurity at the summit. The event aims to shed light on how hackers are harnessing AI to conduct large-scale cyberattacks and what measures organizations can implement to bolster their defenses.

According to Cisco’s 2024 Cybersecurity Readiness Index, AI has become integral to cybersecurity strategies across Bahrain, the UAE, and the wider Middle East. It ranks as one of the five key pillars of cybersecurity readiness essential for securing modern organizations. The report highlighted that an impressive 91% of UAE companies are now employing AI technologies to navigate the rapidly changing threat landscape.

Alsumaim remarked, “AI is rapidly transforming the landscape of cyber warfare, altering how nations and organizations defend themselves and how adversaries conduct attacks. Future conflicts may involve AI-driven autonomous systems capable of launching and defending against cyberattacks with minimal human intervention, potentially leading to faster and more destructive engagements in cyberspace.”

He emphasized the necessity for nations to adopt AI-driven cybersecurity solutions to protect critical infrastructure, prevent national disruptions, maintain operational security, secure supply chains, resist hybrid warfare, safeguard civilian populations, and ensure economic resilience.

Recognizing that no single nation can tackle these sophisticated threats independently, Alsumaim stressed the importance of cross-border cooperation in sharing knowledge, intelligence, and best practices. Bahrain and the UAE stand out as both beneficiaries and key contributors to this collaborative effort.

“Bahrain has established a robust legal and regulatory framework for digital security, while the UAE leads in AI adoption and cybersecurity through its National Cybersecurity Strategy and smart city investments. Their strategic locations and advanced digital infrastructures position them as pivotal players in global cyber defense,” he added.

The 26th edition of Intersec, the premier trade fair for safety, security, and fire protection, will take place at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC). While the Security Leaders’ Summit will focus on cybersecurity, the three-day conference will also address integrated security innovations, balancing privacy and risk, and strategies for global collaboration.

Grant Tuchten, Portfolio Director at Messe Frankfurt Middle East, stated, “At Intersec 2025, summit attendees will gain insights into how AI is reshaping the cyber threat landscape in the Middle East, equipping organizations with practical steps to mitigate risks and enhance their resilience. This session will underscore the necessity of staying ahead of emerging threats through AI-powered defense mechanisms.”

The UAE Cyber Security Council is a supporting partner of Intersec 2025, which will feature a dedicated spotlight on cybersecurity, particularly within the in{cyber} section. The event will also include a startup zone and Innovation Stage, showcasing cutting-edge solutions and advancements in the field.
