The interest and debate surrounding private 5G networks is growing. Private 5G here and now, a recent report from NTT Ltd. and Economist Impact, revealed significant global interest, with 90% of CIOs and executive decision-makers believing that private 5G will become the new standard for networks. Around 51% of businesses plan to deploy a private 5G network by year-end in 2024.

Although the availability of APIs opens up new avenues of attack for malicious actors, there are a number of measures telcos can implement to protect their network. One third of respondents said they will implement network DDoS before commercial launch, while 28% plan to implement identity and access management systems and 22% next-generation firewalls (NG-FWs) before going live.

Looking patterns of 5G, it is gaining traction faster than 4G, which was launched over a decade ago. This is due in part to the abundance of 5G-enabled smartphones on the market. According to Ericsson Mobility Report from November 2021, we expect 4.4 billion 5G subscriptions by the end of 2027, accounting for over half of all mobile subscriptions worldwide.

In the Industry 4.0 era, critical industries from manufacturing to transportation to energy and utilities view 5G as the catalyst furthering change. 5G has the potential to accelerate the adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0, and drive further innovation, automation and efficiency. To extract the full potential of 5G, operators need to look beyond the public network.

According to the World Bank, in 2019, trade represented more than 60 percent of the global gross domestic product (GDP). Data from The International Chamber of Shipping reveals that shipping plays by far the largest part in this, facilitating roughly 90 percent of the world’s trading. The ports of the world literally keep its goods flowing.

The design of 5G networks — with its ability to allow millions of devices in high-density settings — can enable smart supply chains, autonomous transportation, smart manufacturing, mass adoption of the internet of things (IoT) and much more.

Wireless carriers have invested billions into their networks to support the ongoing demand for faster network speeds. They must look for ways to increase revenue while delivering more value to the end user.
