For the first time in its global network, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, part of the M42 group, has performed a robotic mastectomy, introducing a cutting-edge, minimally invasive option for breast cancer patients in the UAE. This pioneering procedure minimizes the physical and emotional impact of breast surgery by requiring only a small incision under the armpit, reducing visible scarring, preserving sensation, and enabling quicker recovery.

Unlike traditional mastectomies that involve larger incisions across the chest, robotic mastectomy uses advanced technology to delicately remove breast tissue while sparing surrounding nerves. The approach allows for immediate breast reconstruction, delivering both aesthetic and therapeutic benefits.

Dr. George Haber, CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, emphasized, “The introduction of robotic mastectomy here marks a transformative step in breast cancer care. This pioneering procedure, the first in our global network, offers patients a minimally invasive option that not only reduces recovery time but also enhances their quality of life. We are proud to lead these advancements in the UAE.”

The surgery, led by Dr. Ahmad Matalkah from Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s Breast Surgery Programme, employed the Da Vinci single-port robotic system. Dr. Matalkah highlighted the benefits, noting, “Robotic breast surgery offers precision, minimal scarring, and faster recovery, making it suitable for selected patients with breast cancer or those opting for risk-reducing mastectomy due to genetic factors.”

Dr. Tibor G Kovacs, Staff Physician in the Breast Surgery Programme, added that the technique supports implant-based reconstruction with a nipple-sparing approach, providing crucial physical and emotional benefits to patients by ensuring a more natural appearance and faster return to normal activities.

Globally, robotic mastectomy is a new development, and the Abu Dhabi team underwent specialized training with international robotic surgery experts. However, as Dr. Matalkah noted, eligibility for robotic mastectomy is carefully assessed on a case-by-case basis, considering factors like tumor size, body size, and patient health.

This milestone underscores Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s commitment to advancing healthcare options and improving outcomes for breast cancer patients across the region.
