Confluent, Inc., a real-time data streaming company, has announced the acquisition of WarpStream, an Apache Kafka®-compatible platform known for its innovative Bring Your Own Cloud (BYOC) architecture. This acquisition expands Confluent’s data streaming portfolio by offering a solution specifically designed for large-scale workloads with relaxed latency requirements, such as logging, observability, and feeding data lakes. With WarpStream, Confluent now provides comprehensive data streaming options for businesses, whether they require fully managed services with Confluent Cloud, self-managed solutions with Confluent Platform, or BYOC with WarpStream.

WarpStream’s BYOC model brings a new level of flexibility to cloud-based data streaming. Many organizations struggle to unlock the full value of their data due to fragmented data estates. Confluent’s recent data streaming report highlights that 91% of IT leaders see data streaming platforms as key to achieving their data-driven goals. With the acquisition of WarpStream, Confluent addresses this challenge by offering a solution that balances flexibility and operational control, giving businesses more options for how they manage their data streaming needs.

The addition of WarpStream’s next-gen BYOC architecture allows customers to leverage a shared responsibility framework. This means both the customer and Confluent share operational responsibilities, making it easier for businesses with regulatory or contractual barriers to adopt cloud-based data streaming. WarpStream’s Apache Kafka compatibility and cloud-first approach offer scalability for organizations managing high-volume workloads, such as data lake integration and real-time observability.

WarpStream’s co-founders, Richard Artoul and Ryan Worl, designed the BYOC architecture by separating compute and storage, a method that significantly reduces the operational burden for customers. WarpStream’s architecture, built on object storage, aligns with Confluent’s Kora engine, further enhancing Confluent’s ability to offer a seamless data streaming experience across various cloud environments. This approach positions Confluent as a key player in cloud-based data streaming, offering innovative solutions for large-scale data management.

With WarpStream now part of Confluent’s product portfolio, businesses can expect new features, including processing and governance capabilities, to be integrated into the BYOC model. These enhancements will provide organizations with a complete data streaming platform that supports logging, observability, and other high-scale workloads.

Jay Kreps, Co-Founder and CEO of Confluent, expressed excitement about the acquisition, stating, “With WarpStream, we now have a data streaming solution for every business need. WarpStream’s BYOC model is an impressive innovation that allows us to offer data streaming that meets a wide range of operational and regulatory requirements.”

WarpStream’s CEO, Richard Artoul, echoed this sentiment, saying, “Joining Confluent enables us to push our BYOC model further and ensure that Kafka-compatible data streaming is available to every organization, no matter their size or industry.”

With this acquisition, Confluent strengthens its position as a leader in the data streaming space, offering businesses more flexibility and control over their cloud-based data streaming operations, while ensuring compatibility with Apache Kafka and supporting high-scale data workloads.
