Dr. Ebtesam Almazrouei Leads UN’s AI for Good Initiative

In a landmark move, Dr. Ebtesam Almazrouei has been appointed Chairperson of the AI for Good Impact Initiative, a pivotal platform within the United Nations dedicated to harnessing the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) for positive global change. This announcement was made during the prestigious AI for Good Global Summit 2024 held in Geneva, Switzerland.

The AI for Good Impact Initiative, established by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a specialized agency of the UN focusing on digital technology, aims to utilize AI to address pressing global issues and work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. Dr. Almazrouei’s leadership will steer this initiative towards supporting various projects and ambitious endeavors across all 17 SDGs and regions worldwide.

Commenting on her new role, Dr. Ebtesam Almazrouei emphasized the transformative potential of AI in accelerating progress towards the SDGs. She underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in developing inclusive and sustainable AI solutions for the betterment of humanity.

The AI for Good Impact Initiative, under Dr. Almazrouei’s guidance, will actively promote projects, collaborations, and frameworks aimed at advancing the UN’s SDGs. With a target of raising 20,000,000 CHF annually, the initiative seeks to achieve significant global impact while prioritizing the involvement of developing nations in its programming and activities.

As Chairperson, Dr. Almazrouei will lead the Executive Impact Circle, comprising esteemed representatives from government, NGOs, industry, and academia. Together, they will drive the strategic direction of the AI for Good Impact Initiative, focusing on building robust AI ecosystems through partnerships and collaborations, promoting ethical AI practices, and advocating for responsible AI usage to address global challenges effectively.
