du, a subsidiary of Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company (EITC), has successfully partnered with Nokia and MediaTek to significantly enhance 5G uplink performance in the Middle East and Africa (MEA). This groundbreaking trial, the first of its kind in the region, has achieved a remarkable 70% boost in uplink speeds on du’s 5G Advanced network, while also improving indoor coverage for premium customers.

Conducted in Abu Dhabi using du’s 5G Advanced infrastructure, the trial integrates multiple frequency bands and features advanced technology such as three transmitter antennas and 2-component Carrier Aggregation (2CC). These innovations are crucial for high-demand applications like video conferencing, live streaming, and large data uploads, offering robust connectivity and superior network efficiency.

Hasan Alshemeili, Head of Infra Technology Planning at du, emphasized, “This trial accelerates our network’s uplink performance and underscores our commitment to enhancing customer connectivity since our 5G launch in 2019. Our continuous infrastructure upgrades ensure an exceptional 5G user experience.”

Nokia contributed its AirScale portfolio, including baseband and Massive MIMO radios, to enhance capacity, coverage, and performance. Mohamed Samir, Vice President of Mobile Networks, Middle East at Nokia, stated, “This trial demonstrates our commitment to providing cutting-edge technological solutions that meet the evolving needs of connected societies and optimize network performance.”

MediaTek provided its T830 5G mobile FWA platform, highlighting its role in setting new benchmarks for wireless communication technology. Dr. Ho-Chi Hwang, General Manager of Wireless Communication System and Partnerships at MediaTek, remarked, “Our joint trial reaffirms MediaTek’s dedication to advancing wireless communication technology with high-performance capabilities.”

Carrier Aggregation remains vital for mobile operators to optimize spectrum and network resources, delivering enhanced user connectivity, increased data rates, and improved coverage.
