Acronis, a global cybersecurity and data protection company, has revealed the findings of its inaugural report, Data Privacy in 2025: A Survey Exploring Consumer Views on Cyber Protection. This comprehensive report provides valuable insights into global consumer attitudes and behaviors regarding cybersecurity, data protection, and privacy concerns.

The results highlight several critical issues surrounding data breaches, the adoption of security tools, and notable gaps in mobile security and backup practices.

Key Findings:

  • Data Breach Concerns Dominate: 64% of respondents identified data breaches as their top privacy concern. Despite increasing awareness, 25% of participants reported experiencing data theft or loss, with 12% unsure if they’ve been breached, revealing the hidden nature of many cyberattacks.
  • Backup Practices Show Positive Trends: Two-thirds (66%) of respondents back up their data regularly, but 9% do not back up at all, and 4% are unfamiliar with backup concepts.
  • Weak Password Security: While 68% use strong, unique passwords, only 46% employ two-factor authentication (2FA), a critical security measure against breaches.
  • Mobile Security Awareness Lags: 43% of respondents use mobile security apps, while 35% are unaware of such tools, highlighting a gap in mobile security adoption despite the increasing reliance on smartphones.
  • Attitudes vs. Actions: Over 60% of participants rated data security as “very important,” yet only 40% regularly update their passwords, and nearly 70% use public Wi-Fi for sensitive activities.
  • Frustrations with Security Tools: 30% of respondents find security tools too complex, and 25% cite high costs as barriers to adoption.
  • Generational Divide: Younger consumers (under 35) report more data breaches than older demographics (55–64), potentially reflecting riskier digital habits.
  • Rising Cyber Education: 44% of respondents use video-based resources to learn about cybersecurity best practices.

A Call for Action on Data Privacy Day

Gaidar Magdanurov, President at Acronis, commented, “This survey sheds light on the disconnect between growing awareness of cyber risks and the lack of proactive security measures. As we celebrate Data Privacy Day, it’s critical that individuals adopt basic security practices like regular backups, enabling 2FA, and using mobile security apps.”

Gerald Beuchelt, CISO at Acronis, added, “There is a paradox where individuals are aware of the risks, yet lack the tools or knowledge to protect themselves. This report underscores the urgent need for simpler cybersecurity solutions and stronger education to bridge the gap between awareness and action.”

The Acronis Data Privacy in 2025 Survey serves as a global reminder of the importance of personal data protection, urging consumers to take foundational steps to secure their digital lives and safeguard their personal information.
