Dell Technologies edge innovations extend IT beyond the data center

Dell Technologies has announced edge innovations across its infrastructure and PC portfolios, aimed at making deployments easier and capturing more value from data generated and processed outside of the traditional data center and public cloud—from rugged and remote locations to retail stores and factories floors.

“The edge is technology’s next great frontier, and it’s all around us, everywhere from retail to manufacturing, smart cities and hospitals,” said Michael Dell, chairman, and chief executive officer, Dell Technologies.

He added, “At Dell, we’re innovating simple solutions, so organizations can analyze data closer to where it’s created, make faster decisions, improve outcomes and drive progress.”

“Technology leaders are facing the very tall order of finding the right infrastructure to manage data at the edge and the right solutions to capture value from that data to make real-time data-driven decisions,” said Matthew Eastwood, senior vice president, IDC.

By 2023, according to IDC, 50 percent of new IT infrastructure will be deployed at the edge. Dell Technologies serves data life cycle demands for what is becoming the next major technology frontier, with 69 percent of Fortune 100 companies now adopting its edge solutions. The following are some of the new solutions and updates that have been announced:

• Dell EMC VxRail satellite nodes – Marginal sites with a smaller infrastructure footprint can benefit from VxRail’s operational strategy and efficiencies. VxRail satellite nodes single-node deployments automate day-to-day operations, health monitoring, and lifecycle management from a centralized location without the need for local technical and specialized resources. • Dell Technologies Validated Design for Manufacturing Edge with Litmus – No scripting is required to connect, manage, and orchestrate diverse industrial edge devices, data, and applications—from the factory floor to the enterprise cloud. With real-time data analytics and centralized device management provided by the enterprise-grade Litmus Industrial IoT edge platform, manufacturers can make prompt decisions to fix equipment before it malfunctions, enhance product quality, and save money. This is Dell Technologies’ second solution to help enterprises deal with the complexities of manufacturing edge deployments. It’s built on Dell EMC VxRail or PowerEdge servers, with the option to use VMware Edge Compute Stack.
• Dell EMC Edge GatewayDell EMC Edge Gateway enables organizations to securely link various edge devices across OT and IT systems in order to gain useful insights. This fanless, 5G enabled Edge Gateway with 9th Gen Intel Core processors is designed for industrial use and can endure temperatures ranging from minus 4 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. The gateway, which is provided directly to customers and through OEM partnerships, provides storage and computing capabilities to run localized data processing and analytics applications, assisting in the resolution of data gathering and processing issues.
• Dell EMC Streaming Data Platform (SDP) On Dell EMC VxRail and PowerEdge servers, it delivers better GPU optimization to ingest streaming video in a reduced latency and frame rate environment and support real-time analytics. With a new edge package, organizations may run lightweight workloads on a single core, allowing them to start small and scale their infrastructure as needed.
• Latitude 5430 Rugged and Latitude 7330 Rugged Extreme Laptops are built to survive the harshest conditions while still providing the best performance and connectivity. As the industry’s lightest and most powerful 14″ semi-rugged laptop, the Latitude 5430 Rugged laptop is 5G capable and ready to work from anywhere. As the industry’s smallest 13″ fully-rugged laptop, the Latitude 7330 Rugged Harsh laptop is 5G-capable and ready to take on the most extreme settings.

Dell’s existing edge offering is being expanded with capabilities to satisfy particular customer needs, as evidenced by these recent advances. At VMworld, Dell Technologies unveiled APEX Cloud Services with VMware Cloud, which delivers a Dell-managed secure and consistent platform for enterprises to migrate workloads across different cloud and edge environments and scale resources quickly with predictable pricing and transparent prices. Furthermore, the new Dell EMC PowerEdge tower and rack servers assist enterprises in managing everything from business-critical workloads to edge virtualization.
