As part of its broader commitment to social responsibility, Fortinet announced its environmental sustainability ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 and the construction of its new net-zero Sunnyvale HQ facility.
Ken Xie, Founder, Chairman of the Board, and CEO at Fortinet
“Fortinet has led every evolution of cybersecurity innovation over the past two decades. Innovation that drives environmental sustainability is also core to our efforts to make the world a safe and sustainable place to live and work. We believe it is our corporate responsibility to continue to reduce the environmental footprint of our products and continue to adopt responsible approaches in our daily operations. The announcement of our 2030 net-zero target and our new net-zero corporate headquarters are concrete proof points of our commitment.”
Fortinet will become carbon-neutral by 2030 through the use of renewable energy, energy, and carbon efficiency methodologies, and emissions offset programs across its owned operations globally, including offices, warehouses, and data centers, in accordance with the Science-Based Target Initiative (SBTi) methodology and global efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Fortinet has measured its Scope 1 and 2 emissions so far, and in 2022, it will inventory its Scope 3 emissions. This information will be revealed in Fortinet’s first sustainability report, which will be released in the second half of 2022.
Fortinet’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) includes creating sustainable security technologies, diversifying cybersecurity talent, and supporting responsible business across our value chain in order to fulfill our company goal – a digital world you can always trust. Through its CSR approach, Fortinet remains committed to respecting the environment and complying with evolving guidelines and regulations related to environmental sustainability, as overseen by its Social Responsibility Committee—a board-level committee created to oversee the company’s sustainability and corporate social responsibility objectives, strategy, and risks, including Environmental, Social, and Governance matters.
The development and completion of Fortinet’s new corporate headquarters facility, which is on target to become LEED-Gold Certified, is a testament to the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The Sunnyvale campus is a 2021 Silicon Valley Business Journal Structures Award honoree in the “Office/R&D Build” category and consumes 30% less energy than a normal building. Photovoltaic panels and a radiant cooling system that conserves energy and saves 76,600 gallons of water per year are two key components in the building that help to lessen the environmental effect.
These environmentally conscious elements, such as the utilization of solar panels and the purchase of renewable energy in Fortinet’s owned facilities in North America and Europe, coincide with the company’s long-standing commitment to sustainability.
Climate change continues to be a serious issue, and businesses and governments around the world must work together to address it. In addition to its own efforts, Fortinet is working to reduce its customers’ environmental footprints by developing highly efficient, integrated appliances and cloud-based security solutions.
Fortinet has been able to merge several security and networking operations into a single appliance, saving energy, space, and cooling, thanks to years of dedicated innovation and the creation of the industry’s only security-focused CPUs developed for unprecedented power and efficiency. As a result, Fortinet’s FortiGate security appliances use 3 to 16 times less power than rivals’ solutions and have an unrivaled product environmental sustainability impact.
