Gmail does a pretty decent job of attempting to keep our inboxes clear of Spam, Junk emails, and unsolicited advertising using its time-tested and refined algorithms. Even your promotional, social, updates, and forum emails are organised using inbox tabs to keep them out of the primary email tab where your genuine new emails are displayed. Even with all of these technologies, removing junk emails is not always successful, so a little manual work on part of the user can make a big difference.

The first method is inbox categories where the user can different categories within his/her inbox and separate the mail into promotions, updates, forums, social etc. users can then divert all their marketing mail to or for the most part google does this automatically. This can be achieved by going to Gmail settings, making sure to choose the primary inbox as the default and checking the promotions tab after which the user can finally click on ’save changes’.

The second way is to filter out emails. For this users need to open the spam email that they want to filter and then select the menu by clicking on the three dots. From there users can choose “Filter messages like these”. After that users need to click on ‘create filter’ and then either archive or delete the mail. Users can choose the option to use it for all mail that matches the conversation. And then finally finish by clicking again on ‘create filter’.

Last, but not least the users can technically train Gmail to unsubscribe spam mail. This is one of the most successful and advised techniques because, if your attempt to unsubscribe from the list is unsuccessful, it will also classify the message as spam.

Users can simply click the “Unsubscribe” link that displays next to the sender’s email address to terminate their subscription. They will get a notification after clicking there asking them to confirm that they wish to proceed with the unsubscribe.

Clicking on the exclamation point that appears in the menu above the email, and then selecting “Report spam and unsubscribe” will lead to both unsubscribing and marking the email as spam.
