LG Electronics (LG) and Tenstorrent have expanded their collaboration to develop advanced System-on-Chips (SoCs) and systems for the global market. This partnership builds on their initial chiplet project and aims to strengthen LG’s design and development capabilities for AI chips. The collaboration aligns with LG’s “Affectionate Intelligence” vision, driving innovation in AI-powered home appliances, smart home solutions, future mobility, and commercial applications.
The importance of high-performance AI semiconductors in advancing AI technology has led LG to focus on boosting its in-house development capabilities while collaborating with global leaders like Tenstorrent. This partnership is set to enhance LG’s competitiveness in AI, particularly through Tenstorrent’s world-class AI and RISC-V technology.
Tenstorrent is known for its expertise in designing high-performance computing (HPC) semiconductors, utilizing its RISC-V1 IP (Ascalon) and AI IP (Tensix). These technologies are engineered to scale efficiently from milliwatts to megawatts, providing exceptional performance and energy efficiency. The collaboration will enable LG to integrate these cutting-edge technologies into its products, including AI-powered home appliances, smart home solutions, and more.
Recently, LG CEO William Cho and Tenstorrent CEO Jim Keller met at LG Twin Towers in Yeouido, Seoul, to discuss their strategic partnership. Both companies explored opportunities to leverage their intellectual properties, design assets, and technologies, with a focus on creating synergies in AI home appliances, smart home solutions, future mobility, and data center video processing.
The collaboration also considers the establishment of a long-term internship program, supporting talent development and strengthening the partnership. LG’s commitment to advancing AI-related software and algorithm technologies will further enhance its competitive edge in generative AI, powering AI chips and securing its leadership in on-device AI technology.
“Tenstorrent is bringing the industry’s best AI and RISC-V technology to this collaboration,” said William Cho, CEO of LG Electronics. “We aim to deliver a new customer experience with our unique Affectionate Intelligence, offering personalized, caring solutions that better understand and add value to our customers.”
Jim Keller, CEO of Tenstorrent, expressed excitement about the partnership, noting, “LG has a strong SoC development organization, and our AI and RISC-V technology enables LG to own their silicon future, providing customizable solutions for customers.”
LG’s dedicated SoC R&D center is focused on system semiconductor design and development, excelling in the creation of high-performance SoCs using chiplet technology. This innovative technology integrates multiple chips into a single package, delivering high-performance, low-power AI semiconductors. LG’s proprietary AI chips, like the “DQ-C” for home appliances and the “Alpha 11 AI Processor” for OLED TVs, have strengthened the company’s position in the global AI appliance and premium TV markets.
As AI continues to play an increasingly significant role in various industries, LG is enhancing its system semiconductor design capabilities. By integrating AI-related software and algorithm technologies, LG is proactively preparing for the future. The ultimate goal is to deliver Affectionate Intelligence solutions across all everyday spaces, providing customers with differentiated and meaningful experiences.
