Meta Platforms’ (META.O) newest social media platform, Threads, has surpassed 175 million monthly active users, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Wednesday. This milestone comes just before the platform’s first anniversary.

Threads, which launched on July 5 last year, aims to compete with X, formerly known as Twitter. The app’s release was strategically timed during X’s turbulent takeover by billionaire Elon Musk. Threads quickly gained traction, reaching 100 million users in less than a week. This rapid growth was partly due to the seamless setup process for Instagram users migrating to Threads. However, some early adopters have since left the platform.

In a recent Threads post, Zuckerberg reflected on the platform’s eventful year. Back in April, he reported that Threads had over 150 million monthly active users. Despite this growth, the platform has not disclosed key metrics such as daily active users and average time spent per user, which are crucial for assessing its true popularity.

Market intelligence firm Sensor Tower highlighted that while Threads has expanded internationally and introduced new features, it has struggled to maintain user engagement. In the past month, users averaged three sessions and seven minutes per day on the app, a significant decline of 79% and 65%, respectively, from July last year.

Threads currently does not feature advertising, resulting in minimal revenue for Meta. Recently, the platform joined the Fediverse, a network of social media sites supporting the ActivityPub protocol, allowing users to interact across various platforms.
