Middlesex University (MDX) Dubai has announced its collaboration with Fortinet, among global leaders in cybersecurity that drives the convergence of networking and security. The partnership is a significant stride in MDX Dubai’s dedication to advancing cybersecurity education.

MDX Dubai has joined Fortinet’s Academic Partner Program, a component of the Fortinet Training Institute that focuses on preparing the future workforce. This program collaborates with higher education institutions globally to provide Fortinet’s acclaimed training and certifications to students, nurturing skilled cybersecurity professionals. Fortinet aims to train one million individuals in cybersecurity by 2026.

In its role as an Academic Partner, MDX Dubai will seamlessly integrate Fortinet Network Security Expert (NSE) certifications into existing courses. Additionally, the university will offer standalone self-paced learning opportunities for students, covering levels from Fortinet Certified Fundamentals to Fortinet Certified Solution Specialist. To enhance the educational experience, MDX Dubai will provide hands-on lab experiences using Fortinet network security technologies.

Beyond delivering NSE courses, MDX Dubai and Fortinet plan to collaborate on research and development initiatives. They will explore avenues for knowledge sharing through workshops, guest lectures, internships, and faculty visits. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing ceremony occurred at the University’s campus in Dubai Knowledge Park on December 11th, attended by Fortinet executives, MDX Dubai undergraduate security students, and staff.

The partnership aligns with the UAE Government’s Advanced Skills Strategy and Centennial Plan 2071, prioritizing specialized skills for students. It also supports the goals of the UAE Cybersecurity Council, aiming to develop a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy and a secure cyber infrastructure in the region.

Addressing the talent shortage in cybersecurity, the collaboration aims to mitigate cyber risks. As per Fortinet’s 2023 Global Cybersecurity Skills Gap Report, 68% of organizations in the UAE face additional cyber risks due to unfilled IT positions resulting from the skills shortage. Alain Penel, Vice President, Middle East, Turkey & CIS at Fortinet, emphasized the significance of Academic Partnerships in closing the talent gap.

Professor Fehmida Hussain, Deputy Director of Engagement and Student Experience and Head of Computer Engineering and Informatics, highlighted that the partnership with Fortinet is a pivotal step in fostering industry-academia partnerships and enhancing the student experience. Integrating Fortinet’s NSE certifications into courses aims to empower students with practical skills applicable in the dynamic field of cybersecurity, addressing the skills gap and aligning with MDX Dubai’s mission of preparing students for success in the digital era.
