Nokia has successfully implemented its AVA Energy Efficiency software for Safaricom Kenya, aiming to enhance the operator’s energy savings across its 5G, 4G, and 3G networks. The deployment, encompassing approximately 30,000 cells, is anticipated to result in planned energy cost reductions of 8-10%. This initiative follows a successful pilot program with Safaricom.
Utilizing artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms, Nokia AVA for Energy automatically deactivates idle equipment during low usage periods, maintaining optimal customer experience. This is complemented by Nokia Radio Energy Efficiency features. With a track record of over 50 completed or ongoing energy-saving projects globally, Nokia is aiding Communication Service Providers (CSPs) in their efforts to diminish energy consumption, cut costs, and address environmental sustainability concerns.
Samar Mittal, VP, Cloud and Network Services (CNS), Global Business Center (GBC) at Nokia MEA, emphasized the synergy between digital and green initiatives, stating, “There is no green without digital.” He expressed satisfaction in assisting Safaricom in optimizing network power usage through advanced software capabilities, ensuring meaningful reductions in power consumption and costs without compromising customer experience. This achievement aligns with global discussions on environmental sustainability, including the upcoming United Nations climate conference.
Anthony Gacanja, Network Director at Safaricom Kenya, acknowledged the multifaceted challenges posed by network power consumption and highlighted the significance of the Nokia rollout in addressing these challenges. He emphasized the commitment to maintaining network quality and reliability while simultaneously mitigating environmental impact.
