In the Industry 4.0 era, critical industries from manufacturing to transportation to energy and utilities view 5G as the catalyst furthering change. 5G has the potential to accelerate the adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0, and drive further innovation, automation and efficiency. To extract the full potential of 5G, operators need to look beyond the public network.

To start, the production and manufacturing of vehicles needs to be protected, especially as operational technology and information technology convergence becomes the norm. Challenge is that many legacy OT systems cannot afford any downtime and are highly sensitive to any disruption; many systems are irregularly and infrequently patched. That results, OT systems often lack consistent protection or single-lens visibility.

According to FortiGuard Labs statistics, average weekly ransomware activity was more than tenfold higher in June 2021 than a year ago. Over the course of a year, this shows a continuous and overall steady increase.

A big issue is that the IoT devices market isn't regulated and homogeneous. With cheap consumer IoT, there is not a significant demand nor budget for security, and as such, it tends to be somewhat forgotten.
